Ugly Kid Joe - Stairway To Hell - 2013

Not much socially redeeming here, I'm assuming the budget was low, and they want to rerecord songs to reassert rights. I do hope it garners enough interest to get them a real budget for a full length affair.

Kingdom Come - Outlier - 2013

Always dug Lenny Wolf since Stone Fury's - Burns like a Star/Let Them Talk and was fairly surprised at the backlash from the inital "Kingdom Clone" forray. But the biggest problem for a long time is just how plodding and meandering his stuff has been, and this one adds some WTF weird elements. The only upside is it was released in the states, so people probably won't demand $35 for a copy of it.

Hungarian metal

(sorry for the quality of the album cover, here's a picture of the band)

Scelerata - The Sniper - 2012

Lot of the usual suspects hanging around this one, Andi Deris, Paul Dianno, Dennis Ward, etc. Fabio Juan is a pretty good step up from the last guy, and this is fairly good slab of Brasilian metal. Some are comparing him to Andre Matos and/or Edu Falaschi but I'm not entirely convinced. There's still something missing from this that separates from some of the great Angra or Shaman albums.

Airbourne - Black Dog Barking - 2013

If You liked the first two, you'll more than likely like this one. More of the same (not that that's a bad thing), but unfortunately I guess there's a deluxe/limited edition out there that ups the ante from 10 songs to 13 studio 8 more live.

Burning Rain - Epic Obsession - 2013

Pretty much thought Keith St. John was going to be the weak link coming in, and no surprises here. I was PISSED when he replaced Michael Mulholland in Medicine Wheel, and he seemed an unlikely candidate for Doug Aldrich's post Bad Moon Rising project, essentially following the incomparable Kal Swan. Everything else here works, just hoping for a "new" Burning Rain someday.

One of Queen's best "deep cuts", and my favorite from the News of the World album:

Homerun - Black World - 2011

2009's Don't Stop was a little rough around all the edges. This is a major improvement in all areas, almost taking them into the quality of Gotthard/Late Shakra territory. Hope they get another shot at it, and can pull a couple things a little tighter.

Pinnick Gales Pridgen - S/T - 2012

Pretty good album from all involved. It seems a little muddy on the low end with my standard settings, but I love Eric Gales, and King's X (especially early on). I could deal without the cover of Sunshine Of Your Love.

Timo Tolkki's Avalon - The Land Of New Hope - 2013 - Standard Edition

This seemed like a dream on paper, Elize Ryd with out Cookie Monster, Russel Allen, Rob Rock, Kiske, Sharon Den Adel, Tony Kakko, Jens Johanssen, Derek Sherinian, etc. etc. but after a few listens, I'm just not feeling it. The production is pretty meat and potatos, and despite some of the best purveyors of bombast out there, it just seems ill-executed and flat/dry.

The worst part is Elize gets a stylistic shift that kind of leaves her as generic metal opera singer #1. The standard edition was too cheap, I couldn't resist, but I may wait it out for the video componentry of the deluxe edition later. There's still at least one copy available on amazon for 7.48 shipping included.

My favorite guitar solo (Robert Fripp) on my favorite album from 1975:

One of the first releases on the resurrected Okeh Records imprint, 2013's Quartette Humaine features pianist Bob James and saxophonist David Sanborn performing a set of mostly original songs that walk the line between funky contemporary jazz and more thoughtful post-bop. It’s also the first collaboration between the two giants of contemporary jazz since their 1986 Grammy Award-winning album Double Vision. However, rather than revisit that album's funk and smooth jazz leanings, here James andSanborn summon the spirit of the legendary Dave Brubeck quartet featuring saxophonist Paul Desmond. While they don’t play any Brubeck songs, the album was recorded with Brubeck's adventurous, often challenging acoustic jazz spirit in mind.

Sanborn also wanted to move away from the hemmed-in studio sound both artists were known for and investigate a live-in-studio approach that allowed for more unexpected improvisational situations. For his part, Sanborn benefits from the more freewheeling style and showcases an earthy, blues-oriented sax sound that brings to mind such influences as Hank Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman. Joining the duo are drummer Steve Gadd and bassist James Genus, whose compelling rhythmic choices and more than technically proficient chops are a perfect match for James and Sanborn. These are classy, no-nonsense songs that allow both of these jazz superstars to stretch themselves past what any existing fan might have thought of as their limit.

I *loved* Double Vision, and they were on Fallon a couple of weeks ago.

I saw Sanborn at a Blue Note in the late 90's and he was amazing.

It's quite good! Jazz is not an everyday listening experience for me......but from time to time the mood strikes me and I enjoy it. I was happy to discover that is was not the usual boring "smooth jazz" that the owner of the CD usually listens to....it's the real thing.

I ripped it to FLAC before I returned it, for backup purposes, of course.....

If you're into Ozzy/Black Label Society, pick anything from these guys up, as they're a dead ringer.

Orianthi - Heaven In This Hell - 2013

The last one didn't do much for me. This one is pretty good, and could have easily been great, but just some really weird production choices with guitar tones, distorted vocals and arrangements that just makes it hard to really like it.
