Octane Twisted, the first album by Porcupine Tree in three years, is a double-live disc recorded at Chicago's Riviera in 2010 during The Incident tour. It also includes highlights from the band's concluding concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Recording a concept album is fraught with danger as well as possibility; a touring one is an exponentially greater challenge -- especially when the studio recording is a chart success. The Incident went Top 30 in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Disc one features The Incident in its entirety. The studio album was presented as a seamless 55-minute suite. It gets tossed out the window almost immediately here. Opener "Occam's Razor" gives way to "The Blind House" easily enough, without interruption, but as the latter track concludes, Steven Wilson breaks the spell by greeting the crowd.

Most cuts here closely adhere to the lengths of their studio counterparts, with one great exception: "Time Flies" allows the improvisation to go on more than a minute longer to excellent effect -- the distortion and guitar pyrotechnics are remarkable. As a whole, Octane Twisted contains less of a dynamic and textural range than The Incident did, but that proves to be a positive because it more than makes up for it in pure rockist force and drama. Check the raw emotion in "Drawing the Line," the metallic bass throb in "Circle of Manias," and the increased tension between Richard Barbieri's keyboards and Wilson's guitar in the title track for examples.

The second disc does contain a live performance of "Bonnie the Cat" from The Incident's bonus disc, the remainder is performances of songs from the band's catalog. Its highlights include an extended reading of "Hatesong," a 15-minute medley of "Russia on Ice/"The Pills I'm Taking" (the latter is the second part of "Anesthetize"), and the cosmic single "Stars Die." Set closer "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here," which originally appeared on 2005's Deadwing sends it all off in grand, sprawling style. Beautifully recorded, Octane Twisted offers live proof that The Incident stands as one of rock's most ambitious concept works.

3rd shot from these guys, been 6 years since Continuum, which I just got a little while ago, and I have to say I think I like Continuum better. Maybe it's just because I've given it a little time, but it seems a little more melodic where this one is trying to be more technical thrashy.

Journey - Live In Manilla - 2011



Kind of have a beef with Journey after doing an exclusive walmart deal for Revelation, and tales of them crapping on Jeff Scott Soto. But the you-tube era, psuedo Tim Ripper story of Arnel Pineda, and their ability to still write and execute good songs makes me keep going with them. Didn't buy this though. List price of $50 for the blu-ray is ridiculous, caught it on Paladia, so no extras for me, just a 2:25 long show, which surprisingly has drummer Deen Castronovo taking lead vocals on a few songs. Great sound, video, production. Good blend of old and new. Just wouldn't drop that much on it.

Amaranthe - Amaranthe - 2011



I knew up front that there was a lot of screaming on this, but got it any way because there were some scathing reviews and comparisons to Britney Spears doing pop metal. I guess they call it melodic metal, but three singers. One female (pretty good but buried a lot), one male (pretty good), and sreaming Andy. This would be a pretty fantastic pop metal disc in a All Ends or Lullacry vibe if it wasn't for him. Maybe they'll get bored with him (one can hope). New release supposedly in 2013.

The mother of all solo instrumental albums, and with good reason. Mixing traditional carols with Pachelbel's Canon and a few originals, Winston produces a solo piano album of unparalleled -- and undeniable -- beauty. How can music be simultaneously stirring and soothing, relaxed yet exalted? Millions have found the answer here, and an industry has spent more than a decade trying to duplicate it.

Released in 2003, Damnation is easily the most radical departure of Opeth's career. The companion piece to the previous year's Deliverance set, to which it was originally inextricably married (before record company marketing men got their dirty little hands on them), the album is the first to explore the group's non-heavy metal-based songwriting both at length and exclusively. Since all of Opeth's previous outings were specifically conceived for the express purpose of contrasting heavy and light, violent and delicate, black and white, such a uniform presentation would already be surprising enough, but perhaps even more astounding is the realization that Damnation can't even be termed a heavy metal album.

This is because, except for very brief moments in the excellent "Closure," not a distorted power guitar chord, not a pounding bass drum, not a growled death vocal is to be found here -- only mellow, melancholy, deeply reflective numbers boasting melodic electric and acoustic guitars, the odd bit of piano and Mellotron (performed by the producer, Porcupine Tree's Steve Wilson), and background string arrangements. Rather, alluringly mournful tracks like "Windowpane," "Death Whispered a Lullaby," "Hope Leaves," and "Ending Credits" are at once complex and supple. Relatively of short length by Opeth standards, they often resemble the short musical interludes separating the band's prevalent explosions of black metal fury and progressive rock excursions.

Laid out in unnaturally fluid sequence here, these songs obviously fail to provide the striking, surprise-filled experience that longtime Opeth fans have grown accustomed to, but once the novelty sinks in, those fans will easily come to enjoy and recognize Damnation for the finely executed if unique chapter it represents. In fact, even traditional rock fans with no interest in heavy metal whatsoever are likely to appreciate Damnation for its beautifully assembled, reliably high-caliber songwriting -- it's that good.

As for devout metalheads seeking their first taste of Opeth's usual, furiously metallic onslaught, they should start with the aforementioned Deliverance or perhaps 2000's Blackwater Park in order to get a more accurate glimpse of the Opeth they've been reading about. Ideally, however, open-minded listeners will sample both Deliverance and Damnation in the manner intended in the first place: together, as dissimilar halves comprising an astoundingly inspired whole.
