In This Moment - Blood - 2012

UGH. I hate this. I had to force myself to listen to it all the way through. After The Dream, I thought they'd finally decided to ditch the scr-emo, and bought this before it and all the previews were released. Should have waited. I *never* sell cds, but I can't wait to get this dreck out of my house.

review by John Bush

The first masterpiece of what was only termed trip-hop much later, Blue Lines filtered American hip-hop through the lens of British club culture, a stylish, nocturnal sense of scene that encompassed music from rare groove to dub to dance. The album balances dark, diva-led club jams along the lines of Soul II Soul with some of the best British rap (vocals and production) heard up to that point, occasionally on the same track. The opener "Safe From Harm" is the best example, with diva vocalist Shara Nelson trading off lines with the group's own monotone (yet effective) rapping.

Even more than hip-hop or dance, however, dub is the big touchstone on Blue Lines. Most of the productions aren't quite as earthy as you'd expect, but the influence is palpable in the atmospherics of the songs, like the faraway electric piano on "One Love" (with beautiful vocals from the near-legendary Horace Andy). One track, "Five Man Army," makes the dub inspiration explicit, with a clattering percussion line, moderate reverb on the guitar and drums, and Andy's exquisite falsetto flitting over the chorus.

Blue Lines isn't all darkness, either -- "Be Thankful for What You've Got" is quite close to the smooth soul tune conjured by its title, and "Unfinished Sympathy" -- the group's first classic production -- is a tremendously moving fusion of up-tempo hip-hop and dancefloor jam with slow-moving, syrupy strings. Flaunting both their range and their tremendously evocative productions, Massive Attack recorded one of the best dance albums of all time.

I'm in a mellow mood, so I typed in "Massive Attack" on Pandora....it's been a nice, soothing afternoon.

I have always love Alice In Chains, and I think that was a pretty decent cover!

Haven't heard that cover. That was quite good. I gotta say Layne Staley did it much better, IMO.

Dream Theater - Cover of Dixie Dreg's Odyssey.

What a fantastic instrumental, and this means no Labrie vocals, Marvin.

It's flawless, IMO

Saga 20/20 - 2012 - Regular Edition

Well the Sadler-less era of Saga is over. While 2009's The Human Condition with Rob Moratti was okay, it didn't particularly sound like Saga. That has been corrected here and the classic Saga sound is back in full effect.

The special edition didn't have any additional songs, and a short DVD (supposedly only 25 minutes).

Pretty Maids - It Comes Alive Maid In Switzerland - 2012

I don't normally buy live CDs, but since this had a DVD of the show, I sprung for it. Despite Pretty Maids being around for 30 years or so, this is the first "professionally" recorded video. Ronnie and Ken are looking pretty scary, and the rest of the band is flushed out with a much younger crowd. Pandemonium era songs are nailed down, but the rest seem to be more from muscle memory, so there's a fair amount of divergence from the studio recordings from Ronnie.

The video is the standard meth fueled frantic editing for "artistic" reasons, and it makes it nearly unwatchable, a shame because the performance is pretty good overall. But because their catalog is so large, even 22 songs leaves out a lot of my favorite songs.

Storyville - Live At Antones - 2008

Same deal as the pretty maids packaging. Two cds, and a DVD recording of the show. I love these guys and was severely disappointed when they gave up after 1998's Dog years. The video is pretty lo-fi, but the band rocks it out with enthusiasm.
