Tidal is the debut album by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, released by Epic Records in the United States on July 23, 1996 (see 1996 in music). It peaked at number fifteen on the U.S. Billboard 200 and as of October 2005 had sold 2.7 mill copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan.[1] It was certified gold by the RIAA in December 1996, platinum in July 1997, two times platinum the following October and three times platinum in April 1999.
Tidal produced six singles: "Shadowboxer", "Slow Like Honey",[2] "Sleep to Dream", "The First Taste", "Criminal" and "Never Is a Promise". "Criminal", the album's most popular single, won a 1998 Grammy Award for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" and was named the single of 1997 in a poll of Rolling Stone readers.[3] The music video for "The First Taste" never aired in the U.S.[4]
The 2005 album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise by Bettye Lavette is titled after a lyric in "Sleep to Dream", and includes a cover of that song.
In 2008, Entertainment Weekly named Tidal the 20th Best Album of the last 25 years (1983-2008).

(What's the Story) Morning Glory? is the second album by the English rock band Oasis. Released on 2 October 1995, the album was Oasis' most enduring commercial success, charting at number one in the UK (staying there for 10 weeks) and number four in the U.S. The album sold 347,000 copies in its first week in the UK[citation needed] and has so far sold close to 20 million copies worldwide.[citation needed] It is the third biggest-selling album in UK chart history (with 4.3 million copies sold), behind Queen's Greatest Hits and The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band respectively. The album has gone 4× platinum (4.6 million copies) in the United States.[1][2][3]
Album singles "Some Might Say", "Roll With It", "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger" were hits in the UK, with "Some Might Say" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" both reaching the number one spot in the UK singles chart. "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" went gold in the United States.[4] The album won Best British Album at the 1996 Brit Awards.

[edit] Background and recording

Oasis achieved commercial success with the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994. That November after a performance in Hamburg, Germany, guitarist and chief songwriter Noel Gallagher performed all the songs he intended to group to record for its next album on his acoustic guitar. Guitarist Paul Arthurs said he was so awed by the quality of Gallagher's songs that he wept.[5]
In May 1995, Oasis began recording their next album at Rockfield Studios, near Monmouth. The band recorded quickly; early on, the group averaged recording close to one song every 24 hours. Tension arose between Noel and his younger brother, singer Liam Gallagher, when the former told the latter that he wanted to sing lead vocals on either "Wonderwall" or "Don't Look Back in Anger". The younger Gallagher considered this tantamount to a temporary exile from his own group. The issue dissipated momentarily as Noel was pleased with Liam's vocal take of "Wonderwall". However, tension rose due to Liam's strained attempts to sing the high notes on "Champagne Supernova". When Noel subsequently took his turn to record his vocals for "Don't Look Back in Anger", Liam went to a local pub and came back accompanied by a crowd of people while his brother was recording. The siblings then began fighting viciously; Arthurs described it as "a proper fight". As a result of the brawl, Arthurs said that Noel instructed the group to leave for London at four in the morning. At seven AM Arthurs called the group's management company Ignition to tell them that the album was cancelled. Ignition did not believe Arthurs at first and hung up on him; the company soon after realised that Arthurs was serious. Producer Owen Morris was "gutted" that sessions were called off; however the rest of the band was not as concerned. Arthurs said he told Morris, "'It'll be all right. Give [Noel] a week at home.' By then it was just, 'Oh - another fight.'"[6]
The Gallagher brothers reconciled three weeks later. The group spent another two weeks working on the album, followed by post-production work in London. Morris claimed the album was recorded in 15 days; he said once the album was finished, "This album will wipe the field with any competition [. . .] It's astonishing. It's the bollocks for this decade."[7]

[edit] Music

John Harris commented in his music history Britpop!: Cool Britannia and the Spectacular Demise of English Rock that much of the music on (What's the Story) Morning Glory? "seemed to reveal little more inspired than a string of musical hand-me-downs". Among the musical cues Harris noted on the album were Gary Glitter's "Hello, Hello I'm Back Again" ("Hello"), John Lennon's "Imagine" ("Don't Look Back in Anger"), the theme to the 1970s children's programme You and Me ("She's Electric"), and the R.E.M. song "The One I Love" ("Morning Glory"). One song, "Step Out", bore such a close resemblance to the song "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" by Stevie Wonder that it was removed from the album shortly before release due to the threat of legal action.[8]
Despite critics who derided Noel Gallagher's appropriation of other songs, Harris commented "the fact that [Gallagher's] songs contained so many musical echoes seemed to couch the album in an air of homely reassurance". Harris believed that the "ordinary" nature of some of the album's songs "turned out to be part of its deeply populist appeal".[9]

[edit] Release and reception

Please help improve this article or section by expanding it. Further information might be found on the talk page. (June 2009) Although "Some Might Say" was released first, "Roll With It" was selected as the album's lead single. The single had a tentative release date of October 1995. Fellow Britpop band Blur assumed Oasis would follow music industry protocol and release the single three weeks before the album. Blur later learned that Oasis moved up the single's release, which would place it a week before Blur's single "Country House". In reaction, Blur changed the release date of "Country House" to be the same week as that of "Roll With It".[10] The chart showdown, dubbed "The Battle of Britpop", resulted with "Country House" outselling "Roll With It" to top the UK Singles Charts". Overall singles sales that week were up by 41 percent.[11]
(What's the Story) Morning Glory? was released on 2 October 1995. The album sold quickly; the Daily Mirror reported the day after release that central London HMV stores were selling copies of the album at a rate of two per minute. At the end of the first week of sales, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? had sold 346,000, making it the fastest-selling album since Michael Jackson's Bad in 1987.[9]
The album received mostly positive reviews from critics upon its release. NME gave the album seven out of 10,[citation needed] and Q gave it 3 stars out of 5.[citation needed] Rolling Stone gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, stating that "Oasis have discovered their feminine side" and adding "that doesn't mean they can't still rock".[12]
The success of Morning Glory catapulted Oasis from being a successful Britpop band to being one of the biggest bands in the United Kingdom, with substantial international fame and considerable press coverage in the mainstream and music press. The band played several large open air concerts in the UK during 1996, including two nights at Knebworth in front of a combined audience of 250,000 people (125,000 each night);[13] at the time, they were the biggest gigs ever held for a single band on UK soil.
In 1997, Morning Glory was named the greatest album of all time in the "Music of the Millennium" poll, conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 1998, Q magazine readers placed it at number 1, and in 2000 it achieved the same position in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums Ever" list. In 1999, the editors of Q declared it the "album of the decade". The readers of Q placed it first again on the 2006 top 100 greatest albums of all time list. In 2003, the album was ranked number 376 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2008, a poll conducted by Q magazine and HMV to find the best ever British album put the album in second place behind Definitely Maybe.[14]

I like only a few songs by Kiss, I think they're a little overrated. Strutter is my favorite song. I also like Detroit Rock City a lot.

Rock n Roll Animal is a live album by Lou Reed, released in 1974. In its original form, it features five songs from different periods of his creative career, including several songs by the Velvet Underground. The songs are all re-arranged into a powerful glam rock set. The musicians were Pentti Glan (drums) and Prakash John (bass) of the contemporary Alice Cooper band, Ray Colcord (keyboards), and Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter on guitars. The album was recorded live on December 21, 1973 (1973-12-21), at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York.
A remastered version was released on CD in 2000. It featured greatly improved sound quality, including two tracks not included on the original LP or 1990 CD release.
Further excerpts from the same concert were released in 1975 as Lou Reed Live. This live album's stereo mix differs from its counterpart in that guitarist Dick Wagner is heard on the left channel, and Steve Hunter is on the right; this arrangement is reversed on Rock 'n' Roll Animal.

U2 - Boy = Damn Good Debut Album

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
Boy is the debut album from Irish rock band U2, released October 20, 1980. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album received generally positive reviews.[1] Common themes among the album's songs are the thoughts and frustrations of adolescence.[2] The album included the band's first United Kingdom hit single, "I Will Follow". Boy's release was followed by U2's first tour of continental Europe and the United States.[3] Despite being unpolished, these early live performances demonstrated U2's potential.[4] In 2003, it was ranked #417 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
I just bought the 2008 Remaster of this album today.

First saw 'em opening for Coldplay, caught my attention for purely shallow reasons (heh) They ended up sounding waaay better than Snow Patrol, who were also opening (but I kind of dislike Snow Patrol. A lot.) Picked up the album at the merch counter on the way out, it's quite nice..

U2 - October = Amazing album one of my favorites of all time.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
October is the second album by Irish rock band U2, released in 1981. The album featured spiritual themes, inspired by Bono, The Edge, and Larry Mullen, Jr.'s memberships in a Christian group called the "Shalom Fellowship", which led them to question the relationship between the Christian faith and the rock and roll lifestyle.[1] The album received mixed reviews and limited radio play.

Reception

Album sales indicate that October is the least popular of U2's studio albums,[citation needed] and it is frequently at the bottom of many U2 fans' lists and polls. Only one of the songs from October, the title song, was featured in the band's The Best of 1980–1990 collection, as a hidden track at the end of the album, although both it and "Gloria" (which, despite mostly poor album reviews, became somewhat of a hit[citation needed]) were staples of the band's live set throughout the eighties. On the other hand, October was ranked as #41 on CCM Magazine's 2001 list of the greatest Christian music albums of all time, one of two U2 albums to make the list, the other being The Joshua Tree.

Track listing

All songs written and composed by U2, with lyrics by Bono.
# Title Length 1. "Gloria" 4:14 2. "I Fall Down" 3:39 3. "I Threw a Brick Through a Window" 4:54 4. "Rejoice" 3:37 5. "Fire" 3:51 6. "Tomorrow" 4:39 7. "October" 2:21 8. "With a Shout" 4:02 9. "Stranger in a Strange Land" 3:56 10. "Scarlet" 2:53 11. "Is That All?" 2:59 41:05
