Quote:
Jose Sena known professionally as Nego Gato is a Master Capoeirista, Composer, Choreographer, Percussionist, Vocalist and Dancer. He is the founder, Artistic and Executive Director of Nego Gato Inc a Pittsburgh based organization with affiliates in New York and Naples Florida. He serves as a consultant and Master Folklorist of African Brazilian Heritage to Lisangua Ya Bato Drum and Dance and the Oliveros Foundation for their production on Nzinga, the Queen King.

He has been performing professionally since the age of 10 and since coming to the United States he has presented performances and residencies in primary and secondary schools and cultural institutions throughout the US , Europe and Japan.

He formed the Nego Gato Afro Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble to share with audiences the rich history of this diverse culture. "I was born into a spiritual house of African Brazilian traditions. In Brazil this spirituality is know as Candomble and has its roots in Congo-Angola, Benin, Togo and Nigeria. My mother danced for the spirits. When I was in my mother’s womb, I floated around to these rhythms. As a child I witnessed nightly ceremonies whose memories became the driving force of the direction of my life. I am deeply proud of what I have accomplished through my dedication and expertise in my artistry and culture. I can only hope that my work in every community pays respect to my ancestors and my heritage".

The Nego Gato Afro-Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble bring to their audiences the rich African influenced rhythms and dances originating in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, a region known for custom deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of ancestral Africa.

The ensemble is directed by Jose Sena, known professionally as Nego Gato, to share his experience of growing up on the streets of Salvador immersed in the magical sounds of the Street Musicians, Carnaval, and Camdomble ceremonies. Their repertoire includes works from Afro-Brazilian Folkloric Dances such as Samba, Maculele, and the Dances of the forces of Nature, known as Orixa in Brazil. It features a performance of Capoeira, an African Brazilian martial art that combines dance, gymnastics and acrobatics.

All are accompanied by live percussion and traditional instruments making for an exciting and engaging performance.

The 1970s Yes recordings are still considered the classic Yes sound by many fans. These albums feature complex classically influenced arrangements, unusual time signatures, virtuoso musicianship, dramatic, dynamic and metrical changes and oblique, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Songs often exceeded the standard three-minute pop-song structure with lengthy multi-part suites sometimes lasting 20 minutes or more, making the band a leading 1970s progressive rock combo. Vocal verses alternated with atmospheric instrumental interludes, frenetic ensemble passages and extended guitar, keyboard and bass improvisations. The signature sonic features of this 'classic' period are Jon Anderson's distinctive high-register lead vocals, the group's strong vocal harmonies, Rick Wakeman (and Patrick Moraz) and Steve Howe's respective keyboard and guitar solos, Bill Bruford's and later Alan White's polyrhythmic drumming and Chris Squire's highly melodic and discursive bass playing, enhanced by the sound of his Rickenbacker model RM1999 bass.
Chris Squire was one of the first rock bass players to successfully adapt electronic guitar effects such as tremolo, phasing and the wah-wah pedal to the instrument. The rhythm section of Squire/Bruford and Squire/White was considered by some to be one of the best in rock music at this time.

Tales From Topographic Oceans marked a change in the band's fortunes, polarizing fans and critics alike. Although extended compositions were by now a Yes hallmark — the title track of Close To The Edge took up the entire first side of that album — the four roughly 20 minute tracks on the two-disc Topographic Oceans earned mixed reviews and left many feeling that the band was beginning to overreach itself. Coming after extensive touring, the album was later described by Jon Anderson as "the meeting point of high ideals and low energy." Rick Wakeman, in particular, was not pleased with the album, and to this day speaks ill of much of it. It is said that the mockumentary film, This Is Spinal Tap, was largely inspired by the album and its tour. On the other hand, many prog-rock fanatics consider it to be one of the greatest progressive albums of all time. As divided as the opinions get, the one thing that is certain is that this album leaves behind an impression - whether it be positive or negative

The Andrews Sisters - Bei Mir Bist Du Schön

Quote:
The Andrews Sisters were a group of singing sisters: LaVerne Andrews (contralto; July 6, 1911-May 8, 1967), Maxene Anglyn Andrews (high harmony; January 3, 1916-October 21, 1995) and Patti Andrews (lead; born February 16, 1918). All were born in Minnesota to a Greek immigrant father and a Norwegian American mother.

“Patty Andrews, the lead singer of the Andrews sisters group was born in Mound, Minnesota on February 16, 1918 in a house that occupied the property where The Gillespie Center stands today.

During the 1920’s Laverne, Maxene and Patty Andrews spent their summers in Mound, living with their parents in a house across the street from the grocery store that was owned by Pete and Ed Sollie, bachelor uncles of the three girls. (Today, Green T Accounting occupies the Sollie grocery store building and The Gillespie Center is on the land where the Andrews Sisters’ house once stood.)” - From a commentary by Tom Rockvam that appeared in The Laker Newspaper during 2005.

They started their career as imitators of an earlier successful singing group, the Boswell Sisters. After singing with various dance bands and touring on Vaudeville, they first came to national attention with their recordings and radio broadcasts in 1937. Their music entertained Allied troops worldwide during World War II, sold war bonds, appeared in several films (including a few Abbott and Costello features), and performed for soldiers serving overseas. Their first film with Abbott and Costello, the pre-war comedy Buck Privates, introduced their best-known recording, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” which would win Best Song at the Academy Awards.

And One - BodyPop

And One

And One, the popular synth-pop band from Germany, formed in 1989 after Chris Ruiz and Steve Naghavi met in a Berlin disco. They were both fans of Belgian EBM music, so they decided to play together, using only a drum machine and two keyboards, like their musical idols Depeche Mode had. Working together they compiled a demo tape that producer Jor, who was planning on starting a sub-label off of Modern Music, happened to like. The duo met success rather quickly after that, as they were the first signed band to Machinery Records. In 1990 they released their first single, "Metalhammer".
After playing many live shows, the band garnered a large following of fans. They played at lots of parties and opened for other successful bands, such as A Split Second, Consolidated, Pankow and Die Form. They added a third member, Alex Two, and then released their first album, Anguish, which helped them achieve Germany's best new artist award in 1991 and kept them at the top of the German EBM charts. At the end of '91, they also released an anti-war song, 'Aus Der Traum,' that for every copy was sold the band donated a portion of the profits to Greenpeace.
In 1992, And One released the rather short (less than 35 minutes long) album FLOP, that although scant contained the instant dance-floor hit, "Techno Man." After that, Chris Ruiz left the act and Joke Jay took his place just in time to release the Monotonie ep. In 1993 they released the more commercial-sounding (and sometimes criticized for that) album Spot, with the single "Life Isn't Easy in Germany," that had portions donated to charity for each sale. After that, Alex Two left the band and was replaced by Rick Schah, who helped on the next album, 1994's i.s.t. that contained the sentimental single, "Driving With my Darling." In 1995, the band released the successful single, "Deutschemaschine".

After that, due to differences, And One escaped Machinery Records and was quickly signed to Virgin Records. Their first release under Virgin was the single Sometimes, followed by the 1997 album Northlive (Nordhausen) and two more singles, "Sweety Sweety" and the ominous "Sitata Tirula". In '97 they also put out their best OF album, disguised as a full length CD of their singles. In 1998 they put out the EP "Maschinenstuermer", the single "Get you Closer", and the pop-ish album 9.9.99. In 2000, a new bandmate, Annelie Bertilsson, was added, and the catchy album Virgin Superstar was released, along with the single from that album, "Wasted". In 2001 they released the mp3 "Amerika Brennt", and in 2003 they released the single "Krieger".
Their 2004 album, Aggressor, cemented and reinforced the And One sound. Sounding much like their i.s.t album with aggressive lyrics, most of the songs had strong, danceable beats, pretty keyboard melodies, synthy sound effects and deep, harmonious vocals.
Two years after the release of their political Aggressor, And One unveiled their newest album Bodypop for 2006. Sung in English and German, the songs revolve around love, lust and obsession. The up-tempo album features poppy melodies and bouncy beats, merged with deep vocals to create a light-hearted feel. In conjunction with the album, the Frontfeuer EP was released. Containing five brand new tracks (not remixes), the EP’s lead track “Rearming Strafbomber” is the English version of their club hit “Strafbomber!”
In the spring of 2009, And One will release Bodypop 1 ˝ which features three new songs in conjunction with unreleased versions of “So Klingt Liebe” and “Love You To The End,” as well as live versions of cover songs that they have performed throughout the years.

Purple Rain was the first Prince album recorded with and credited to his backing group the Revolution. The resulting album was musically denser than Prince's previous one-man albums, emphasizing full band performances, and multiple layers of guitars, keyboards, icy electronic synthesizer effects, drum machines, and other instruments. Musically, Purple Rain remained grounded in the electro-funk and R&B elements of Prince's previous work while demonstrating a more pronounced rock feel in its grooves and emphasis on guitar showmanship. As a soundtrack record, much of the music had a grandiose, synthesized, and even—by some evaluations—a vaguely psychedelic sheen to the production and performances. The music on Purple Rain is generally regarded as the most pop-oriented of Prince's career, though a number elements point towards the more experimental pop/psychedelic records Prince would record after Purple Rain. As with many massive crossover albums, Purple Rain's consolidation of a myriad of styles, from pop/rock to urban R&B to dance, is generally acknowledged to account in part for its enormous popularity.
In addition to the record's breakthrough sales, music critics noted the innovative and experimental aspects of the soundtrack's music, most famously on the spare, bass-less "When Doves Cry," which was frequently identified as pop at its most avant-garde. Other aspects of the music, especially its synthesis of electronic elements with organic instrumentation and full-band performances (some, as noted above, recorded live) along with its landmark consolidation of rock and R&B, were identified by critics as distinguishing, even experimental factors. Stephen Erlewine of Allmusic writes that Purple Rain finds Prince "consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal" and identifies the record's nine songs as "uncompromising...forays into pop" and "stylistic experiments," echoing general sentiment that Purple Rain's music represented Prince at his most popular without forsaking his experimental bent.[4]
"Take Me with U" was originally written for the Apollonia 6 album, but was later pulled for Purple Rain. An unfortunate result of this addition was making crucial cuts to the suite-like "Computer Blue", which circulates amongst collectors in a superior, though unreleased extended version (a portion of this second section of "Computer Blue" can be heard in the film Purple Rain as Prince walks in on the men of The Revolution rehearsing). The song "Darling Nikki" is notable for its lyrical content,[5] which eventually led to the use of Parental Advisory stickers and imprints on album covers by ways of Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center.

[edit] Reception

Prince won three Grammy Awards: for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or TV Special (Purple Rain), and Best R&B Song (songwriter) (Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You") and was nominated for Album of the Year (Purple Rain). "Purple Rain" also won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score in 1985.[6]
Purple Rain sold 13 million units in the United States, earning a Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America. According to Billboard magazine, the album spent 24 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard album charts (August 4, 1984 to January 18, 1985) becoming one of the top soundtracks ever. Purple Rain traded the #1 album chart position with Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. twice, during 1984 and 1985. Two songs from Purple Rain, "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy", would top the U.S. singles charts and were hits around the world, while the title track would go to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The album has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide
