Burzum - Draugen (2005)

Quote:
This collection of rarities / rehearsal recordings is an odd curio. Serving as a reminder of how raw Burzum were and why we all fell in love with it in the first place, it also feels like a clearing out of the vaults.

With the news that he may be eligible for parole sometime this year (2006 for all you youngsters reading this in the future) its tempting to think of this as Varg Vikernes testing the water for future projects.

Kicking things off are the original Aske recordings; raw, slightly different vocals but essential none-the-less.

You want raw, you got it baby. Tracks 4 – 7 are rehearsal tapes that sound like a tape recorder was in the room with Varg as he played guitar along to a drum machine. By turns tinny and bass heavy, the recordings will not be of interest to the casual listener. These are rehearsal recordings and as such ‘Lost Wisdom’ and ‘Spell Of Destruction’ feature no vocals. The latter is a particularly rough recording, with clicks and pops peppering the sound (at times it sounds like he was standing on bubble wrap).

I'm being picky. This is essential for all Burzum fans.

I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love- Peter Allen (from a greatest hits album)

Quote:
I'd rather leave while I'm in love
While I still believe the meaning of the word
I'll keep my dreams and just pretend
That you and I were never gonna end

Too many times I've seen the rose die on the vine
Somebody's heart gets broken
Usually it's mine
I don't wanna take the chance of being hurt again
And you and I can't say goodbye

So if you wake and find me gone
Hey babe, just carry on
You see I need my fantasy
I still believe
It's best to leave while I'm in love

I'd rather leave while I'm in love

Danny Elfman - The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Quote:
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack features 10 ghoulishly delightful songs and score by renowned composer/songwriter Danny Elfman, lead singer of the popular rock group Oingo Boingo. Embracing the traditional musical structure of 10 songs and underscore, Elfman creates a musical landscape in which the story narrative is wholly integrated into each musical number. Allowing the film's fantastic characters to come convincingly to life, the songs set into "stop-motion" the fanciful tale of Jack Skellington with haunting melodies, vivid imagery, and spectacular wordplay. Supported by an evocative and suspenseful underscore, the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack is a dazzling marriage of music and innovative technique.

Diana Krall - The Girl In The Other Room

Quote:
While the jazz fascists (read: purists) may be screaming "sellout" because Diana Krall decided to record something other than standards this time out, everyone else can enjoy the considerable fruit of her labors. The Girl in the Other Room is, without question, a jazz record in the same manner her other outings are. The fact that it isn't made up of musty and dusty "classics" may irk the narrow-minded and reactionary, but it doesn't change the fact that this bold recording is a jazz record made with care, creativity, and a wonderfully intimate aesthetic fueling its 12 songs.

Modelling Queen
Eek-A-Mouse

Quote:
Eek-a-Mouse (born Ripton Hylton November 19, 1957 in Kingston, Jamaica) is one of Jamaica's premier reggae stars. He is responsible for the creation of the reggae sub-genre singjaying. Although now 50 years old, he is still reputed to perform more than 200 shows in a year in America and the West Indies.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica as Ripton Hilton, Eek-a-Mouse began his foray into reggae music when he was in college, but did not begin to garner a substantial audience until 1979 with his hit "Once a Virgin". This same year, he changed his singing name to "Eek-a-Mouse", the name of the racehorse he always bet on. In 1981, he cheered up the Reggae Sunsplash Festival, which was still mourning over the death of reggae icon Bob Marley. After this, his fame continued increasing through the year 1982 until 1988, when he released "Eek-A-Nomics", his last full-length CD until 1996.
Eek-a-Mouse is a regular at the Jamaican music festival Reggae Sunsplash and often teams up with reggae duo Michigan and Smiley. He has also been featured on Christian rock group P.O.D.'s (Payable on Death) album Satellite, lending his vocals to the rock-reggae track "Ridiculous".

Reda Dan Red
Anthony B

Quote:
Anthony B is the stage name of Keith Blair (born March 31, 1976), a Jamaican musician.
Blair grew up in rural Clarks Town in the northwestern parish of Trelawny. His deeply religious family life (his mother was a Seventh-day Adventist and his grandmother a Revivalist) imbued him with a profound spirituality. During his youth, his favorite singers were reggae legends Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, musicians who strongly influenced his own style. Peter Tosh's influence can definitely be heard in Anthony B's vocal delivery and revolutionary stance.

Anthony B adopted Rastafarian beliefs as a teenager, a decision which was not well-received by his family. The stubborn and determined Anthony B refused to give up his new religion and his dreadlocks and moved to the home of his aunt and uncle in the Kingston suburb, Portmore.
While attending high school, Anthony B debuted as a deejay for the local sound system, Shaggy Hi-Power. In 1988, he befriended reggae artists such as Determine, Mega Banton, Ricky General and Terror Fabulous.
At this point in the reggae industry, singing "slack" songs about women was the popular thing to do. Anthony B did not believe in degrading women and chose to pen politically-slanted songs rather than so-called "gyal chunes." He hooked up with Little Devon the Half Pint sound-a-like singer he made his debut single "The Living is Hard" on the Wizard label in 1993. Anthony B tried many different producers but found that none of them fit his style of music.

Arne Domnérus' Group - Good Vibes - Jazz At The Pawnshop 3 (1976)

Quote:
The sound of this 30 year old recording is indeed spectacular, putting you right into the club, and it features some top figures of the Swedish jazz scene, Arne Domnérus on alto and clarinet and Lars Erstrand on vibes in particular. Bengt Hallberg is on piano.
The playing is not too progressive, with some Goodman/Hampton references, but recommended nonetheless for all those with audiophile tendencies.

These recordings recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and the analogue masters have been transferred using improved technology to the finest available digital audio format – SACD. For the first time the complete recordings are collected in a three disc release with full documentation and photos. Some of the tracks have only been available in limited editions which makes it all the more exciting for us to present the music to jazz lovers over the world. The recordings were made in Stockholm on 6 & 7 December 1976 by recording engineer Gert Palmcrantz. The producer and record company owner Jacob Boëthius kept a watching eye on the proceedings. One microphone pair spaced 20 cm apart was responsible for the main pick-up, with a couple of microphones placed to register the “live” atmosphere of the Pawnshop jazz club and a few discrete support mikes – all recorded on to a pair of two-track Nagra tape recorders by Gert Palmcratz in the restaurant kitchen! All who have listened to the recordings can vouch for its realism and uncanny “you are there”-feeling – you simply enter a new, musical world… But the superb technology of the recording is only part of it – the musicianship and skill of Sweden’s finest jazz musicians is just as important. These experienced gentlemen were at the height of their powers these winter evenings more than 30 years ago. The group was lead by alto saxophone player Arne Domnérus, who was once described by Charlie Parker as “a very good player, almost as good as me”. Pianist Bengt Hallberg had impressed Stan Getz when moving through the strangest of keys without any effort, and the rhythm section of bass player Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johansen was the finest in Sweden at the time. It swings and cooks, all trough well-known and loved songs such as In a Mellow Tone, Mood Indigo, High Life, Take Five and a string of other standards and jazz favourites. The set also includes a new DVD where vibraphone player Lars Erstrand, a guest soloist on the second night, and the bass player Georg Riedel recalls these fantastic concerts. If you’re looking for a definitive issue of these recordings – here it is. Treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience!

I have the stupendously $$$ three-CD version of Piper at the Gates of Dawn (the one which looks like a book), but the tracks are still sitting on my View, waiting to be heard.

Today on the bus & train I listened to Material's Temporary Music, some old Cocteau Twins singles (from the 10-disc box set), and Minimal Compact's Deadly Weapons.

Minimal Compact - Deadly Weapons (front).jpg

An '80s technopop band with a distinct Arab flavor to their guitarwork, Minimal Compact remained an obscurity in the States, where they were never able to get visas to go on tour. Israeli expatriates living in Europe, they recorded three good-to-great LPs (also a bad one, just prior to the breakup) for Crammed Discs. One By One is probably their most essential release.

They weren't all that overtly political: but my guess is they were anti-occupation, left Israel to avoid compulsory military service, and thus were persona non grata in the U.S.

Trivia: Colin Newman, primary singer and songwriter of Wire--the legendary post-punk band of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154 fame--is married to Malka Spiegel, one of Minimal Compact's three vocalists.
