I am working graveyard tonight...and I was discussing Queen with the other person who works this shift with me, and he stated that he thinks Freddie Mercury is one the greatest vocalists of all time. I tend to agree with him. I thought it might be fun for us to list some of what we consider the best of vocalists, drummers, guitarists, bass players , etc. Have fun!

Freddie Mercury had god-like energy on stage, singing and dancing… He had the most powerful (male) singing voice ever, IMO.
Also, Danny Carey (Tool) is a pretty epic drummer. http://youtu.be/GKidSVPGLFE Last edited by skamp; 05-17-2013 at 05:09 AM. |

Hard to single out anyone in the "big five" categories, vocals, guitar, drums, keys, bass without pages and pages for me.
So some oddballs: Flute: Ian Anderson Violin: Robby Steinhardt, Eddie Jobson, Charles Waltz

My favorite vocalist
Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin Jim Morrison of The Doors Freddy Mercury of Queen Axl Rose of Gins and Roses. Axl is one of the few male vocalists that has a four octave range and I find his vocals to be insane. As for female vocalists, I think one of the all time best is Pat Benatar who has a 4 octave range. Another favorite of mine is Janis Joplin, as I doubt if anybody can ever sing like her. Lastly, even though she doesn't sing in my genre, you got to hand it to Mariah Carey, who has a 5 octave range. She can sing the paint off the walls. Guatarists - Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, John Petrucci of Dream Theater, and Prince. As for bassists, my hands down favorite is Steve Howe of Iron Maiden Drummers? Buddy Rich is hands down the greatest drummer of all time, and Neil Peart even said he could never play them like him. That speaks volumes. Here.a a video so you can come to your own conclusions: EDIT: Added Jim Morrison EDIT2: Added Prince as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

What was I thinking? How can I leave out Jim Morrison of The Doors, who is one of the greatest vocalists ever. The Doors are also my favorite American group, and I was reminded of this by the passing of Ray Manzerek.

I'd say it's hard to go wrong with Robert Fripp on guitar, especially if you're into weirdness.

Added another person as one of the greatest guitarists and one of my favorites:
Prince Yes, that's right, and he is probably the most underrated guitarist ever. Just listen to him in this YouTube clip:
