Thanks ArchiMark.

I don't know much about portable speakers, I only listen to full-blown studio monitors/subwoofers or headphones...

But generally, Altec Lansing are nice, good price/value ratio.

And a lot of people swear by Logitech and Creative for low-budget satellite/subwoofer combinations.

Don't buy Bose stuff, they're usually overpriced and underwhelming. ("No highs, no lows - it must be Bose" and "BOSE: Basic Overpriced Sound Equipment")

I have a set of Altec Lansing external speakers, and for being so small, they pack quite a wallop and sound really great. I mainly use them for gaming as they carry really well and they don't bottom out like mad with bass.

As for earphones, I bought the Panasonic RP-HJE50 today for $35 at Circuit City, but didn't like them. The sound wasn't bad, like the awful earphones that came with my Sansa e260, but there was something lacking. It seemed like they started to distort with high-end noises, and didn't have a lot of strength to carry the bass in a couple of the songs I was testing them with. I was a tad underwhelmed. I also didn't like that the phones and cord were white. I didn't want anyone to mistake me for having an iPod. These just weren't for me, though. Otherwise, I think they're decent headphones for the price and you could do much worse.

Default Cheap Desktop Speakers

I have a pair of Altec Lansing VS2221 2.1. They produce a considerable amout of volume and bass for $50 and i think it is the best you can buy for fifty bucks. I have also owned other cheap 3 speaker Altec Lansing speakers and they were pretty good as well. AL has yet to dissapoint me.

I just ordered the E2c.. very favorable reviews for "in the ear" phones

...one review called them the Grado SR60 for buds. (sounds like you are on the right track!).. and you can get each for about the same price.

E2c's on Amazon for $72 including tax..(shipping free but 2.95 handling).

Will check on speakers too....jeezz how hobbies grow.....

Check out http://www.head-fi.org/

Everything headphone and lots of reviews.

And http://www.headphone.com/ is a great source for phones and related stuff.

And BOSE is a 4 letter word.

well if it was me. i'd get a pair of Logitech X-230's. because i can get them for about $35AU and or if i dont need a sub then i would get the logitech R10's for $15.

earphones wise i would get my ttrusty and cheap noise isolation buds JVC HA-FX55's. they go for $37AU and or if you dont want isolation buds then get a pair of sennheiser MX450's for $30. iv'e got both and i am amazed with the quality of sound and balance of bass and treble.

Just received my $38 Logitech 2.1 (X-230) from newegg.com

Came in the factory box, no double boxing. Box looked like it had seen better days.
I removed it, it was flawless except for a big rattle in the sub assy. Removed the side mounted driver and found the bass tube had come loose.
Ran some silicone caulking around the end, and stuck it back on.
Closed it up, and it's been rockin' away for the last 3 hours with my U2 tied to it's umbilical.
Super buy at the price, even with the small inconvenience. Highly recommended for casual listening.

JBL does different computer/MP3-compatible speakers. The Creature has a sub-woofer (have these for a TV), uses headphone jack, not so tiny or portable. Also the Duet speakers by JBL also are pretty good. There are lots on sale at eBay. For a portable 1-piece, the JBL on tour does a great job; has a sliding cover and travels really easily.

I don't know, I tend to put JBL right up there with Bose on my overpriced crap list...

Even though this thread is old as dirt, and the guy is probably long gone, I'm going to put in another vote for Altec Lansing. I own a $19 2.1 system from them, and it sounds pretty damn good.

Tobey's right... JBL really doesn't sound good, except for some of their more expensive studio monitors. It's not as bad as Bose, but you find a lot better speakers for a lot less money.

I have these speakers that came with my dads eMachine PC. They dont have a brand name on them (im assuming they're eMachines), but they sound good... And when you turn them on, a little blue light comes on... Can you tell I'm easily amused?

What do you plan on using your speakers for mainly?

I first bought a Creative 3-piece speaker set, SRS 350, for $40 from Best Buy, but a few months later the sound from the left speaker stopped coming out.

Since mostly I use my computer to listen to music while doing homework, using the internet, and for games, I just decided to get a Sennheiser headset for $25. That way I wouldn't be disturbing other people that much. Also, I'm a big fan of Sennheiser's service (they have a standard 2 yr warranty for the headphones).
