How to tell the difference between real and fake Sennheiser CX300/500

A looks original, B looks fake.

B has an edgy Sennheiser logo with no rounded edges, and the nozzle is also edgy, compared to the rounded one of the original. Furthermore, the plug on B looks to be shiny, whereas the plug on my real ones has a rough texture.

They're all OEM products by Foster Japan, but the drivers inside sure aren't the same. And of course you get ripoffs that are even cheaper and worse sounding, since they're so popular.

I just bought CX300B and a CX300S from ebay, both were fakes.
They were bought to replace my current authentic pair of CX300Bs.

The black version was not a very good effort:

- irregular cord length
- very thin wire and insulator
- matt, speckled finish
- large poor quality mesh
- almost centred indentation
- large uncentered R and L
- weakly printed and resized logo

The silver version looked identical, except:

- very thin wire and insulator
- perforated mesh
- near centred indentation
- near matching R and L
- slightly larger well printed logo
- markings on the rubber wire protector

The fakes appear to be getting more sophisticated. The silver version was almost perfect, the only way I could tell the difference was by very close comparison to my retail earphones. The perforated mesh is a giveaway as it is just a punctured sheet of metal, though it does look professional and it is set in the headphone. The wire length is also perfect as measured to my retail pair. Another concern was the rubber at the base of the headphone. Both fakes were of different lengths to my genuine pair and had dents and imperfections throughout.

I bought my fakes from e-digitalsystems.

it seems to fullfill all the qualities of a real pair, but im still not quite sure...
what do u guys think? are these real?

With all the fakes, why bother to buy them … go for a pair of mylarone's or something else

Them pictures, are different to all CX300's, or is it just me, look at the wire, its insulated into one, whereas the pics in the forum have sperate insulations one each earphone wire which are stuck together.

they are exactly as they should look, the cable on the picture is somewhat digitally edited but it is two insulated wires stuck together, with the cable on its side.

yup, those are fakes, the perforated sheet metal grill is identical to the fake silver pair i have.

Where did you buy them from exactly?

I've made a short guide on how to identify counterfeit sennheiser cx300 also applies to the rest of the CX series. I've not compared the "retail" boxes as they're near perfectly copied and very difficult to tell apart (minus the PET print).

stave84's prices look authentic enough, but the guide he's using to verify them is seriously outdated; some sellers don't even know they're selling fakes because they use this guide.

Anyway, good news to hear it checks out genuine! Might have to look into ordering some.
