I cant wait untill we can have AV inputs hardwired into our brains that would be the best ever! ^_^

Better yet nix the AV jacks and give me a mp3 player in my brain!

For me the best phones imaginable are the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro, 80 Ohm version... the one's I'm using most of the time. Others may say they're too bass heavy, but it's a matter of taste. They deliver exactly the sound I want to hear. Soundstage could be a little wider, but it's as good as it gets with closed cans, I assume.

If you're crazy enough you'd buy Sennheiser Orpheus ($10.000), Sony MDR-R10 ($3.000?), Audio Technica ATH-W2002, Grado RS1, AKG K1000, Ultimate Ears 10, Ultrasone 9, etc... the crazyness has no end here. Or some of the electrostats Aardvark mentioned. Of course these phones are nothing without a proper headphone amp, so add that up to the price.

Did you try the AKG K701? I like those better than the 501 - pretty similar sound signature, but better bass response.

BTW $99 seems to be a rather good price for the 501 - they were around ~300 Euros when they were available, IIRC.

I've taken a real liking to the Shure E3C's.
I know that most people comment that they lack good bass response, but I beg to differ because I often go to sleep at night with them on and if I have the BBE Bass sound setting higher than about 4 (iAudio X5L), the bass thumping will keep me awake.

They're more expensive than some and cheaper than others, but they're the first set of earbuds I've had (among a bunch of the $20 variety) that I would replace if I lost them.

My .02

Mark

I haven't only because I am not sold on AKG's yet and the 701's are pricey and white, although getting cheaper. The lack of bass and HUGE soundstage of the 501's is killing me because I love the mids. I want to try some Senn 580 & 650 and Beyer 990(05) and 770/80. I really want a full size KSC75, so the 990's or SR225's might do the trick.

Yeah, the white is damn fugly... what were they thinking?

Besides the 580's and 650's you might give the 600's a try, too... several guys over at Head-Fi swear by them and say they're better than the 650's.. I tried both and couldn't find much difference - except the price.

As for the Beyers... well I'm a big fan of them. They really make my kinda phones. I might get the 880's or 990's for home use, next to my beloved 770's for in- and outdoor use.

If thats the case for the Senn's, then I should be able to get 580's, a 600 cable and grills and be done with it.
