Default Senn CX300 or V-moda Vibes

Okay, I am looking to finally purchase a new set of phones today or tomorrow, and I'm having a hard time deciding between the CX300 and the Vibes. I'm hoping one of you can help me:

I like bass I can feel, but isn't muddy or overpowering. I don't like heavy mids, and I like clear, crisp highs, but not too bright.

So which of the two better meet my wants?

Do you need isolation?

I thought you had already decided

Compared with the SR60 they are a bit rolled of at the top end and not as open or as airy. That said the bass is not overpowering. I have 3 way floorstanding speakers in my main room that push out bass you feel via your kidneys, but the CX300 are not as low as this.

I kind of know what you are asking as I am hoping to get the V-Moda Vibes when I visit Florida in summer.

Why don't you see if you can find some CX300 real cheap. Heck they are still great cans and they are very good for use on public transport.
They are not harsh or splashy at the top end, just a bit set back. I suppose they are warm and refined with a bass feel and just a tad less detail right at the top, example, not as easy to tell how is cymbal is hit or if the drummer has nylon tips on his sticks.

if you want an IEM; gor for the vibes, or UE 5 Pro

if you want headphones: CX300, or the KSC75.

cheers

Mikael can you please explain what you mean. I understand that the Koss KSC75 are like headphones, but the Senn CX300's look like IEMs (or canalphones).

ZenChick:

Have you ruled out the JBL Reference 220 for any specific reason?

If you want bass you can feel, then the Vibes aren't the right ones for you, IMO.

The CX300 might be better suited, they have huge bass (nearly like my S.F 5 EB), somewhat recessed mids and slightly rolled-off treble. They're not muddy, compared to crap phones like the Sony EX71, Koss Plugs, etc.

Another bonus with the CX300 is that they isolate a lot better than the Vibes.

I bought the vibes recently and I'm *really* pleased with them. I listen to a lot of electronica and to be honest some of it has never sounded so good. That said, the bass is superb but you definatley can't feel it and the isolation isn't absolute. I must say though that I actually prefer the not so islolated feel of the vibes. One more thing, I own the Chrome model and the microphonics are very minimal.

Well, my mind was pretty much made up for me when I went to Fry's and couldn't find any Sennheiser-anything - and they had one set of Vibes left on the floor - so I grabbed them. Chrome ones, to be exact.

dfkt's right - they aren't punchy in the bass, but they respond quite well to a little nudge in the lower EQ settings. Overall, I'm quite impressed with these things (my hubby said, "You damned well better be for ninety-nine bucks!"). They sound great - nice and clear, no mud of any kind, and I can now hear detail in music I've never heard before with any set of earphones!

My only real complaint about them is that they are quiet - far quieter than what I've been using, and I have to take the volume up to 22 of 25 to get about the same volume level that I'm used to. I don't suppose this will improve any with burn-in?

But, yeah. They're mine, I love them, and I'm keeping 'em!

Congrats - audio-wise the Vibes are several classes above the CX300... it's not the subwoofer kind of IEM, but the revealing, crisp, real-fun-to-listen-to kinda IEM.

Mine aren't quiet at all - even if they're rated well below my Super.Fi 5 (119dB/mW, the loudest I ever heard in a phone) - they're of a similar volume level. I don't have to turn up the volume on my players any more than usual.

But volume shouldn't change through burn-in, I'm afraid....

ZenChick

Are you sure that you are getting a good seal with your ear canal?

With the CX300 on my ZVM I can reach pain threshold and I run with EU firmware.

You have put me off looking at the Vibes for the time being.

Do they isolate outside noise at all?

Can you wear them in bed comfortably?

I hope you grow to love them, it is a shame when you spend hard earned and disappointment sets hold, nasty pernicious disease is that disappointment.

Vibes> anything I've ever heard. =p

I just use Bassboost on ZVM good enough for me.
Wish the vibes had bass that made windows shake and make you lose your breath. Like a bomb being drop kind of B00M =p, but the Vibes do a good enough job for me I just gotta pretend my body is vibrating along with the beat and I'm good.

Zenchick what are the EQ setting you have?

22-25 on ZVM... I can't handle anything over 20...

Do you have te EU firmware? Hear that one is quieter

Well, with the other buds I was using, I had the volume at around 17, so this is a bit of a jump. How can I tell if I'm getting a good seal or not? I mean, the Vibes sound absolutely awesome - they're just not all that loud (and, no, I'm not running EU firmware).

Oh, hell! I just remembered something: I had recently re-normalized all my music down to 89dB from my old settings of 93dB!

*blushing deeply*

I am glad you sorted that out for yourself. I was getting a little worried.

Ok, now added Vibes back to my list of toys to seek out when I come to the USA

I was about to say man...22-25 =0!

I just put in the music thats at a decent bitrate and I'm good.
I'm down at 15, 17 loudest I usually ever need.

Love the Bass Boost on ZVM (Best player ever in the history of everything and anything) Makes these little things bump =)

They only get better and better as they go...I can't ever go back to stock now...I'm turning into an Audiophile =(. Bad HeadFi...

At least I don't have the need to get even better, these are more then good enough. Can't wait for my case to get here. Thats all that's left.

Leather Case
ZVM
Vibe's

What more could I want?
