Default NWZ-E436F -> Volume Rocker problem

I have a problem on my NWZ-E436F (about 3 years old):

The upper volume rocker doesn't show any reaction when I press it. The lower does, so I can still lower the volume, but can't turn it up again!
In the past weeks it just took a couple of minutes (or presses on the button) until it worked again, but now it completely stopped working.

I reseted the Walkman but that didn't help. I assume there is somewhere a mechanical defect, that there is no contact to that button anymore.

Do you have an idea how I could solve this?
How about if I installed a firmware of the newer Walkman models, which don't have the volume rocker anymore, but instead use the Up and Down arrows for changing the volume?
Would that work or screw up the device completely?

Thanks for your efforts!
