Default What's a refurb?

I'm going to buy the clip + and on ebay there are some sellers who say it's refurbished. Some say it's refurbished by sandisk. Another say it may be not in original packaging.
Should I buy it on amazon? xD
I'm thinking in buying this:

Thanks.

"Refurb" is short for "refurbished". Essentially, a DAP that was once bought new, and returned for repair. Instead of waiting for the repair to be done, they send the customer a new unit.

Once the repair has been performed, and the DAP has been tested as functionning properly, they sell it back with the mention "refurbished", at half the price (sometimes less).

I got my Clip+ at half the original price, and my Fuze+ at about one third, both refurbished. My Clip+ has sometimes display issues (it goes dim, and I have to bang it against the table to make it go back to full brightness), but my Fuze+ works just fine. I even got a full refund for the Clip+, so that one didn't cost me anything, in the end

As for Amazon: as much as I despise their practices with regards to tax evasion, and how they treat their employees, I have to admit that they have excellent customer support. I have benefited from it several times.

Thanks. I've decided not to buy a refurbished one.
So, in amazon you don't have to pay taxes? That's great news.

Yes you do have to pay taxes. It's Amazon who doesn't pay it to the states where it operates.

In all fairness, many online sellers do not collect state sales taxes. You are required to declare these liabilities on you state tax return, it would be interesting to know how many actually do.

And Amazon charges taxes and collects them for items sent to certain states, such as California (as of last year for California).

Also: Clips have been known to go kablooie at times, for no discernable reason. New Clips come with a 1-year warranty (in the U.S.; 2 years in the EU); reburbs generally come with a 90-day warranty (if that). Perhaps a good reason to consider a new one from a source like Amazon. But then again, if the refurb is at a good price . . . .

SanDisk told me that they wouldn't repair or refund my faulty Clip+ on the grounds that it was a refurb. Amazon gave me a full refund however (including shipping fees!), without making any fuss about it.

SanDisk's waranty only applies to new units. They can't (and don't) warranty re-furbs as they don't do the refurbing themselves. Amazon provided stellar customer service as is their practice.

Kudos to Amazon, yet again! And skamp, with a refurb, it is the selling company that often provides the warranty, as vs. the manf. (unless you purchased the refurb from the manf.).
