Default Zune HD advice. Failing device. Should I jump ship?

Hello all,
I am back after a long hiatus from this forum. A lot of devices have come and gone since I left.

Here is my predicament and wanted to get some advise from Zune HD users. I love the product but looking at the dwindling ecosystem I am wondering if I should still invest in the device.

I have a Zune HD and its audio jack is failing. I can send it in for repair for $60 (2nd repair of its kind) or buy a used 32 GB Zune HD for ~$140.

I have recently made my way into the Zune Community only to find that Microsoft has decided to drop all of our play-counts and badges.

The main reason I want to stick with the Zune is this: I have a lot of WMA Lossless music of CDs I ripped over time which don't play well on the Samsung S3.

Should I continue to buy a Zune device? Instead of the 32 GB should I try to get a Zune classic device?

Jump ship and grab something new.

Convert your WMA Lossless to FLAC or ALAC for more hardware compatibility, or do some lossy conversion and just use lossy on your portable player(that's what most of us here do) and keep your WMA-Ls on the computer as archival copies.

I did convert a FLAC to WMA-L once and it played on my Cowon X9, but that's no guarantee that yours would work.

Whatever you choose, I'd be interested to know. I am Zune 32HD user and love it. It was the best priced device for what I wanted. I had looked at the Cowon's which are really nice, but there too pricey.

You had mentioned your earphone jack connection needed to be fixed and mentioned it would cost $65. Can you let me know where this can be done? I recently had to purchase s new one because my old Zune had the same issue. I found the cost to order the part was expensive and didn't want to chance installing. To send out and have fixed for $65 is a good deal.

Default jumping ship

i'm an old member of this forum who hasn't been around for awhile either.

my zune 32g just died 2 weeks ago completely. i'm not getting it fixed.

i decided to switch to windows phone 7.5, an LG c900, with a keyboard.
i got it new on amazon for $80, well worth it for me.

yeah, it has less space (16g), but i feel right at home with the zune
music and video options. they are practically the same, and actually
the screen is much bigger. 800x480.

The battery life is less, but the browser is a lot better.

you already have a phone, but if you don't have one, switching to
a windows phone is a no-brainer.

after the zune hd served me well for a couple of years, i'm happy to
move to a better device. more apps, more productivity, it's a total win.

I'm a die-hard Zune man (times 3 - 16, 120, HD64) but if when my devices die, I'll just let them go. Microsoft has abandoned the Zune. It would have been nice if they had included support for it in the XBOX Music/Groove apps, but I didn't hold out much hope. I've already cancelled my Zune pass as it just wasn't worth it to me. I don't get that much new music, certainly not $14.95/month, and I can get what I want through Amazon and still sync it to my Zunes. I have looked at offerings from Sony, and I've copied everything to a 128GB microSD card and installed it in an HP Stream 7. Not as "pocketable", but more useful most of the time.

MS never really promoted the Zune they way they should have. They were late to the party and gave up. It will be interesting to see how they handle the Surface Air. They're a bit late to that party as well, but maybe they learned a bit.
