Default Missing capacity in Walkman Z series???

Does anybody out there own a Z-series Walkman?

Mine is supposed to have a 16GB capacity (NWZ-Z1050B)
but when i connected it to the PC to transfer files
it only shows 12GB available (12GB total capacity,
brand new player straight out of the box)

Is this a common Walkman problem
or have Sony shortchanged me 4GB???

There's nothing missing. 12 GB is what the specs says. http://esupport.sony.com/docs/portab.../13/01/01.html There's also an explanation of why included on that page.

You may be able to free up some space by removing any preinstalled software. I don't have one so I don't know if it's possible to do that safely. I'd check the user guide before I attempted any deletions.

Thank-you for clarifying that - i should have read the fine print more carefully.
BTW is the 'storage' Hard disk based or 'flash' memory?

The storage is flash based. I can't say that I blame you. You would expect that the software and firmware would take up some storage but going from expecting ~16 GB to an actual 12 GB would surprise just about anyone.
