Default Best "out of date" PMP with good hardware

I'm looking to buy a fairly cheap mp3 player, somewhere under $100, but I'm not really interested in the clip/+.

I'm looking for a sleek, well made and designed PMP with very good SQ (but I'll admit I don't need the best the market has to offer) and I don't really mind if it's a few years old.

I don't think I really need strong video capabilities but a large (by old standards) screen is fairly important to me.

It seems like some Cowon or iRiver players might fit this. Just curious if there were any other possiblities!

Thanks everyone.

How much storage do you need?

The Sony E series is good but it does not have expandable memory

I don't know of a listing of sub $100 outdated PMPs. It would be better if you list which models you're looking at. I'd at least include a minimum capacity and screen size. That way it wouldn't seem as if you're expecting others to do all the research for you.

BTW, it usually works that older PMPs that were decent go up in price rather than down once they're discontinued. The lack of supply seems to cause a rise in the price. The original sansa fuze is a good example. I see prices on them now that would have been laughable when they were being made.

I'll suggest the Sony E Series too, E475 (16GB) retails around 100 USD on Amazon I think.

And yes you're right skip252, the decent older PMPs are so pricey now that they have discontinued. When I was shopping for my E470 series, the older E465 (awesome thing for the 50hrs battery life) was pricy. I just checked now that E465 16GB is 200 (!) USD on Amazon.... And the old S54x/S63x/S65x series are all pricey too.

Wow yeah sorry I was a straight nub.

Yeah so screen size, larger than 3".

Capacity: 16gb, non-expandable (though expandable is always a bonus!)

I guess I'm looking for something along the lines of the Cowon iAudio i9, D3 Plenue, iRiver E300/S100, Sony F-series if it was cheaper, etc.

Really I would buy the Sony if it was cheaper, but that's not the case.

Not sure if there are any sleeper hits I might be able to get ahold of.

P.S. I have owned a Samsung K3 for a few years now, pretty happy with it and definitely don't have a problem with the soft-touch keys.

Look for a refurb Samsung Galaxy Player or iPod touch, but you're going to pay more than $100.

Under $100 is not so easy. I haven't found a player for under $100 that is much better than the Clip+ or Clip Zip. The price on the Cowon C2just went up to $138. I wasn't so eager to buy it anyway when it was $115 due to the semi proprietary connector.

The C2 has a 2.6" screen, not that far from the 3" he wants. a new C2 is now up to $150 on Amazon though.

He could get a used Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 on Ebay for under $100. A used Galaxy Player 3.6 is even cheaper, but has much poorer screen resolution.

if you can find one at the right price I'd go refurb instead of used but I think that's a good idea. I got the 4.0 refurbed about a month ago and I'm just loving it.

I got mine from tigerdirect. I was after the 3.6 but due to an in-store pricing error I was able to get the 4.0 for the same price. I had seen the difference in the screens other places and the nicer one on the 4.0 made getting that at the same price a no brainer.

The screen on the 3.6 isn't really bad imo. It's just that the screen on the 4.0 is that much better.

Welcome to ABi

Just tossing out the name of something you like isn't very helpful. Do you have link to a source for the Cowon O2 at the OP's $100 budget?

I would really really advise against the Cowon O2, its bad as a pmp. The screen is very reflective making daytime use almost impossible, and it has poor audio for video playback.
The C2 whilst carrying a vastly smaller screen at least carries full BBE & Jet Effect support for video playback. Although i didn't use my c2 as a pmp I was kinda impressed at its video playback side of things, for audio wise It was more enjoyable to watch content than even my Galaxy S2. Just make sure if u buy cowon the audio is properly supported on video playback side of things, don't assume anything.
