Hello guys. My long delayed DAP update became urgent now that my D2 was stolen. I'll be getting one of these for decent storage on the cheap. My main concern is how the Zune performs against the 'Pod in terms of UI and sound quality. Also concerned with potential nastiness from Microsoft's proprietary firmware. Please share your wisdom, people.

Yeah +1 to that, I had a Zune about 6 months ago and the platform is completely dead!

I know that w/ the Zune I won't be getting any 'updates', but I can't see myself caring about that, unless there's flagrant shortcomings in the fw. I'll literally use the device for nothing but listening to music.
I would have gotten an iPod ASAP (dat Rockbox+Wofson DAC) but I'm not sure about the wheel controls. What are your impressions on those, mr. Marvin? Last edited by Vicious; 01-01-2013 at 04:43 PM. |

I use mine with a line-out cable and an amp, so I control my volume with the amp's volume knob. But as far as navigating through the library, I have no problems with my rockboxed 80GB ipod which has well over 8,000 songs on it. Normally I wouldn't like a player with the wheel controlling the volume in addition to other things, but the amping solves that problem for me.
And it really sounds fantastic....

Do yourself a favor and get an iPod instead. As others have said here, the Zune is dead (still have a Zune HD myself, but it's never used).
The iPod Classic is a great option. If you're not sure about the controls, you could see if there is a Best Buy or Apple store nearby and go try one out. I don't have an iPod Classic but it would be my first choice for a music-only player.

Can't believe I didn't think about the Apple store. I will definitely do that.
Regarding the Zune, I think I don't get what you guys mean by 'dead'... If I get one it will probably be the 80 or the 120 (?). |

I always like to try out devices before I buy them
. Although I don't know for sure if the Apple store has Classics out to try.....What we mean by "dead" is Microsoft has discontinued the product. There will be no more updates, new features, or devices.

The remaining Zune's are all old stock, and are slowly dieting on people. If you get one & it stops working you your on your own. Microsoft can't send you a replacement/refurb because there are none.
