need good over ear headphones under 40$

I correctly have sony mdr - v150 headphones which are falling apart and are almost unusable they are so bend out of shape. These are going to be used mainly at my computer.

I can't really test them before buying so here's a few I am looking at

do you like the sound of your sonys? They have a more neutral sound if I remember right. Dont get the panasonic you linked. I have them at work and they feel incredibly cheap. and I hate the cable. There are way better for under $40. and if you want to go that cheap then get some JVC Flats. Very highly regarded in that price range. The other two that you linked to, I dont have any personal experience with. Are you obligated to Tiger Direct or is that just where you started looking? Here is what I have on my amazon wish list close to your price range. For this price I think JVC is a no brainer but they are more of an "fun" sound. Most will be in this price actually. Also, you linked to on ear and over ear so I didnt restrict my selection to over the ear.

I have these also and I don't consider them bassy but others do. I have suspected that I got a modded or otherwise altered version since I bought them second hand but haven't cared enough to investigate. they are very comfortable and great for gaming.

something else about your PC...it may sound terrible. I have had some bad experiences with onboard audio driving headphones well. its very hit or miss for me. If you get a recommended headphone and dont like it you should consider adding a better sound card or a small portable amp. Dont do any of that until you try it out first. You may be just fine.

I do like the sonys I have now they have lasted 4 years but are now so beaten up I can barely use them. The sound seems to be even across the board no frequencies are overemphasized which is good for the computer.

My dad might be giving me more money in which case I may buy these

I havent heard the sony you linked but in my experience sony headphones are very hit or miss. some are great, some suck. Inversely I have been happy with almsot every JVC I have bought.

dont bother with the bose. for that money there are tons of options better.

The JVC HA-S160 for around $12 is a great buy for the money. The JVC HA-S400 at around $28 has received great reviews. It has carbon nanotube technology for great clarity.

Yeah, in both that thread and the S500 thread, they've all lost their minds with trying 656245 different earpads and methods of stuffing said earpads with everything from q-tips to toilet paper.....lol.

I did buy one other set of pads for my S500s....a set of Senn. HD25 velours....but they alter the sound a little bit....softening up both the highs and lows, compared to the stock pads. So I am saving them for summertime use, and then I'll correct the sonic difference with EQ.

yup, thats head-fi. they do it to every FOTM. but still, it helps find some gems, that's for sure. although I never quite got the hype on those panasonics.

Not worth that price at all. And they are a very inefficient design....they need more power than a typical DAP can provide. The JVC HA-S160 that JK98 mentioned in an earlier post is a much better choice than the HD201.

how can you tell that from just looking at them and the specs? what in the specs do you look at to determine how much power they need. I heard it was ohms and these are 24 ohms impedance

the headphones would mainly be used on my computer which I would assume has more capability to drive headphones

I used to own them.

It's not just ohms, it is also sensitivity.
The JVC's sound better, regardless of what you plug them into.

The E3....powered by one AAA battery. A flawed design, however....you know the one EQ setting on the E6 where the LED is red, and the sound is all muddy? That's how the E3 sounds, muddy. And the only way to turn it off is unplug it....otherwise you end up with a lot of dead batteries, which is expensive unless you use rechargeables like I used to with it.

specs on headphones are about useless in my opinion. I dont even look at them unless it is the same headphone with differeent version (like some of the beyer models). I read reviews and try out sets. Like Marv said...he owned them, thats the only way he really knows. the 201 is way cheaper on amazon and might be worth the $17 price tag. Never tried them myself.

I read that the E3 sounds much worse than the E6, so I bought the E6. I would have preferred using AAA nimh rechargeables rather than the built battery the E6 has.

The HA-S160 at $12 is the great bargain. It is my favorite cheap headphone. It is very compact, and feels solidly built. it sounds very neutral, with just the right amount of bass, and has good clarity.
