This is not your first Android device, if I remember rightly. So let us know how it compares to what you've tried before.

If you're going to unlock it, make sure you do that before you set it up since unlocking erases your settings.

Well one thing is that Jelly Bean is a lot different than the Froyo version that was on my Archos 43

Trying to find a music player that will stream from my network drive.

My Archos 43 had a default one .

Gives you root and lets you install 3rd party ROMs or modifications.

You mean over SMB? Not sure about that, but FWIW, if you add your SMB drive to google music you can play it anywhere with internet access.
