Default Rovio and Lucasfilm to announce Angry Birds Star Wars on Oct 8, includes merchandise

Rovio has begun teasing a new Angry Birds game featuring the distinctive robe and lightsaber of a Jedi Knight. The game, according to Rovio, will be announced at the Toys ‘R Us in New York’s Times Square on Monday, October 8 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.

While many of the specifics are still shrouded in secrecy, Angry Birds Star Wars will reportedly replace the famous birds with Star Wars characters. Luke Skywalker, for example, will take the place of the game’s most recognizable “character,” Red Bird.

Speaking to Fast Company, Lucasfilm’s Paul Southern noted that casual games are becoming more and more important to Lucasfilm. “As casual games grow as a category and mobile devices grow as an interface, it’s going to become more important for us in the future. Our partnership with Rovio helped us to understand a little bit more about how they achieved that success.”

Southern has also confirmed that the game will be accompanied by a line of collectibles from more than 50 licensees. Products will include toys (specifically action figures), apparel, bedding, and games (like an Angry Birds Star Wars version of Jenga). “We’re hoping to have some of the hottest toys for the holidays,” stated Hasbro’s Derryl DePriest.

I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly looking forward to getting my hands on Angry Birds Star Wars. I'm just hoping it comes to all three major operating systems - Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
