Cowon Volume Poll

I want to iterate that I never continuously listen to volumes over 25, and the average volume I listen to is around 20 - 25. Only for segments where I want to have a full experience I listen to volume over 29, but only briefly. Also, I use a set of Denon IEMs and they go loud as hell and have a nice full bass.

My wife tells me she listens about 26 on her D2 with her UE 600's, but yeh i'm not gonna get Betty Ross to join ABI just for a poll lol.

I guess i find it kinda strange that companies release players with such variance then. I mean, if you never play above 20 (50%), in yer opinion have they included way too much volume? Should it have stopped at say 30 instead of 40?
FWIW i have never bought an amp for a portable rig for volumes sake, i have a fiioe7 used soley for pc for extra volume, but on all portable players owned (including RB sansa goodies) i have been more than satisfied with top level volume (doesn't mean i listen to it at that high).
I was kinda under the impression that some people wanted even louder volumes than what the player was capable of (hence all the pics of rig setups). But now i understand its not all about volume but just driving their headphones properly.

If you split the poll right down the middle, it’s 6 to 4, advantage WG BTW the 0-6 should probably not have been an option

That doesn’t seem unreasonable but still louder than I can take with properly sealed IEMs. Although I know people that listen at that level and louder, one being you

No and no, for example when I connect my player to JVC kaboom or my home amp (marantz) I run it on full and either the i9 or i7 pumps out higher volume this way over the sansa clip on full. So IMO it’s good that they have the capability to go really loud.

A little under 20 in the morning, a little over 20 in the afternoon, maybe high 20's if someone is yakking right behind me on my j3.

Only time I'm over 30 is when I'm trying to drive another system via line i/p. I've forgotten a few times and it's ear frying, but I eq and bbe heavy. Flat just seems so... well flat.

Interesting, I obviously listen a little on the quiet side:

D2 - Shure SE535s - volume 3-5 (normally 4). I am not sure if I have ever gone above about 7 or 8 except when playing.

I use it as an indicator of when the foam olives need changing; if I have to take the volume up to 6 to drown out screaming children on the train then it is time to change the pads.

Forgot to add - all special effects off but I do have a "U" profile EQ setup. Anything lower than volume level 3 and the music is almost drowned out by the background hiss.

I occasionally listen in your range as well, while I replied 7-14 I think it depends on external noise and normally I’m in the lower end of that range. BTW I get excellent isolation from my IEMs or I’ll do the same as you, throw my tips away and replace …

3-5... this astounds me. Using my e10's at this level it would be hardly audible, I could have a conversation whilst iems inserted with music playing at this level, akin to chit chat with background noise lol.

I think the difference there are the IEMs, I just looked up your E10s and your experience makes sense:

E10 - 16Ω and 100dB/mw (+/-2dB)

I have the SE535

SE535 - 36Ω and 119db/mw

I think that would mean my Shures turning out around 9 times the volume for the same input power, although for the same volume setting your earphones are taking about 2.25 times more power (lower impedance). I don't know how the Cowon volume control is rated but I imagine one could calculate the equivalent volume across different IEM sensitivities/impendances.

Nope, it's Bruce's listening taste, not the inability of the E10 to produce sufficient volume at lower levels. I have the i9-E10 combo and the wouldn't imagine abusing my hearing at those volume levels. I listen normally at 12-15. When I really want to pump up the volume I'll take it up around 20.

That's only for very short periods. A song or two. Any longer than that leaves my ears ringing.
