Does Direct Stream Digital (DSD) offer a significant advantage over Pulse-Code Modulation (PCM)? Based on a quick look at the Wikipedia article on DSD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Stream_Digital) there doesn't seem to be a clear advantage of DSD over PCM.

The answer appears to be no. http://old.hfm-detmold.de/eti/projek...paper_6086.pdf.

But according to Sony and Philips, the answer appears to be yes for the following reason: http://s3.amazonaws.com/rapgenius/fi...loYA_money.jpg.

The ever-present danger of Kickstarter and its ilk. But it just seems especially disappointing when we're not talking "newbies."

He should invest it in the device--a good way to shield the fortune.

Hey, I'm impressed.

Someone famous managed to get behind someone else who figured out how to make a triangular box (think about that a moment...) that will run music at levels of definition that only dogs can hear, and with an 8 hour runtime to top it off, and for only a few hundreds of dollars.
And available in primary colors.

How could that possibly fail?

Neil was on Colbert last night. Apparently we're only listening to 5% of music. I am kind of interested in his book about his cars though.

I read his autobiography and it was a rambling mess. Granted, one wouldn't expect anything orthodox from Neil but I was disappointed.

Still love his music, though.

I wonder where the 5% figure he keeps stating comes from. I can't get a file that's transparent to the original CD with any of the encoders I've tried. I can get it down to 5% if I use something like CBR 64 kbps wma but that's fairly easy to ABX against the lossless source.

I'd have more respect for what he says if the figure he gave was at least 10%. That's about what I get when I encode to -V5 LAME. It would still mislead those that don't understand how psychoacoustics is able to remove information we're unlikely to miss from the lossless source. However it wouldn't represent an unrealistically low bitrate as what most people use.

5% of 16 bit * 192 kHz * 2 channels = 5% of 6144 kbps = 307.2 kbps

5% of 24 bit * 192 kHz * 2 channels = 5% of 9216 kbps = 460.8 kbps

There are two possibilities that follow from this. One, Young really does believe that everyone is only listening to 5% of the music. Two, Young knows that what he is claiming is absurd. But for marketing purposes, he knows he has to keep claiming that everyone is only listening to 5% of the music. Of these two possibilities, I do not know which is worse.

I can't believe that when Neil was listening to the Byrds on his car radio in 1966, he thinks it was 20 times better than a standard mp3 file now.

Or even on a top-end record deck of the time.

From Driftin' Back - Psychedelic Pill (2012) excellent album btw.

Quote:
Don't want my mp3
Don't want my mp3
I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back

When you hear my song now
You only get 5 percent
You used to get it all
You used to get it all
Blockin’ out my anger
Blockin’ out my thoughts
Blockin’ out my anger now
Blockin’ out my thoughts…

I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back
I’m driftin’ back
