I agree that Apple isn't going to be too concerned about this player being a challenge to the iPod family. The existing audio formats are well entrenched and will be difficult to dislodge. Plus, it is likely that of all existing formats at least one of them is adequate for most people.

To me, it seems to be an attempt to get us back on the format upgrade pattern that we were on in the analog era and ended with CD: a format becomes a standard, we buy in that format, they then come out with better format, and we re-buy the old music in the new format when our copy wears out. One of the reasons that music sales have slowed is that we don't have to rebuy the same music over and over. Now it's buy it once and that's it for life.

Looking at the player itself, it reminded me of a SlotMusic player. I wonder how many songs it will be able to hold? Based on the three-button control layout, it doesn't seem to offer much in the way of navigation.

I see a lot of hype and no specs ... BTW seems he wants to compete with itunes store as well if you read below and I'd say some type of DRM will be on the menu as well

So what analogue media is this? A tiny tape spinning around inside the device that you record songs on through line in?

Or is it just a journalist who blindly accepts the marketing lingo?

Might it just be something like the HiFiman gear, with rolled off highs to present a more "analogue" experience?

I happen to love the look of the iriver triangle brick, especially since it's a small brick. The pono is huge!!!

I actually had a triangular-shape player back in the day - not the iriver but some cheap chinese make.

It was actually quite comfortable to hold, but it was small - perhaps the same size as the Sony or Samsung stick players. That Pono player looks huge and uncomfortable, no reason, really, for it to be triangular unless it has some compelling feature like a three-sided display.

I like Neil Young but he is full of shit re audio quality. Why doesn't he just tell people to upgrade their headphones/iems?
