An MP3 has less than 5 percent of the data found in a [Pono] master file or a vinyl record.

It looks like someone forgot to do a bit of research and some ABXing.

I notice the word they use is "converted" not "remastered" those 8000 albums. Remastering 8000 albums would be really expensive. Much cheaper to just upconvert and resample the existing titles. If they do it poorly enough it would distort the sound enough to give it that "audiophile" touch.

Strictly speaking these are no big claims - it is no problem to inflate a file with junk data so that the original is a mere 5% in size, so without further information this does not tell us anything about the qualities of these Pono master files. It is also not surprising that "an MP3" (one file, one song) is much smaller than the data representing a vinyl record (~10 songs).

Obviously that marketing quote is intended to give an impression of superiour quality. Whether its actual meaninglessness is due to an intent to mislead, a lack of understanding or mere sloppiness, that is a different question.

Do they actually mean convert, or are they offering 24/192, because I assume the record companies actually have 24/192 files so converting wouldn't make much sense. . .
