Kindle Fire HD rooted

Well that certainly didn’t take long. The fine folks over at XDA-Developers managed to root the Kindle Fire HD just three days after it was released, despite concerns that the device might not be as hackable as its predecessor. The full instructions can be found over on XDA-Developers, but you might want to make sure you know what you’re doing first.

Thankfully, the Kindle Fire HD is running a more recent version of Android – a heavily modified version of Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” – so there should be fewer compatibility issues with the apps found on the Google Play Store. The Amazon Appstore for Android has a decent collection of 50,000 some-odd apps, but – in my experience, at least – many of the apps I want to download are incompatible with the original Kindle.
