Guys,
i have a Sony KDL40EX500 40" LCD HDTV (1080p, 1920x1080, 120Hz, 4x HDMI) and i was considering buying pioneer SP-BS21 Bookshelf speakers. http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS2...pr_product_top I am wondering if i can connect this directly to the TV or will i require a receiver? If i have to add a sub woofer with this speakers, will i require a receiver then? thanks

Because the SP-BS21 are passive, they require an amp/receiver to operate. A direct-to-TV connection will not work.

Thanks epithetless.
Should i consider a 5.1 HTIB or get bookshelf speakers+receiver+sub woofer? i am trying to limit my budget to <$200. i found a couple of HTIB linked below http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BRAVIA-DA...theater+system http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-NS-SP18...theater+system http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3500...theater+system Do you think 5.1 are good idea. Majorly, it will be used for movies, games(xbox 360) and occasional music. thanks

Why not consider a sound bar, although they can get up there in price. No amp needed as most have built in amp and some even come with a sub.

I did consider that option. But the good ones are available for around $150-$200. I feel at that price point, i should get a 5.1 that will provide true surround sound and will make movie watching a good experience. I am not sure if a soundbar will be able to fulfill that.

check refurbs on shoponkyo.com for the best deals on a reasonably good surround sound setup. $20 still wont get you much of a surround sound. for that price you could look at something like a logitech 5.1 system that has multiple inputs. my old set was better than any of the equally priced HTIB that I tried.

thanks. i checked some options. i got my eye on floor standing speakers.
here are those two. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSF-5000-...7853635&sr=1-1 OR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882117403 the reviews are favorable and fits right in my budget. i think i can also expand the system once i have more budget like add receiver, woofer, center channel and rear channel. is it a good option?
