Default Give the new Office 2013 apps a whirl without installing the suite on your tablet

Earlier this week, Microsoft revealed Office 2013, the next generation of its popular productivity suite. Office 2013 will be sold for x86/x64 Intel-based PCs and tablets in the coming months, and a few select programs – OneNote and Lync – will be available as Metro-style apps in the Windows Store. But what if you don’t – or can’t – have Office 2013 installed? The easiest way to check it out is to sign up for the new Office 2013 Web App Preview.

After following the link above, your SkyDrive account will automatically be given access to the new Office 2013 Web App Previews for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. As with past versions of the Office Web Apps, not all features are available. That being said, the apps have been given a few nice upgrades in the visual, performance, and feature departments. Whereas before typing in Word or OneNote occasionally resulted in a short delay between the time a key was pressed and the time it appeared on screen, the new Web Apps seem to be almost instantaneous.

The Office Web Apps also include a new touch mode (click on the blue circles next to the undo and redo buttons) which increases the size of all touch targets. Do you think the Office Web Apps are good enough for use on tablets without a copy of Office installed?

Microsoft Xbox MVP. Long live Zune!
