Apple orders Siri to stop recommending the competition, covers it up with humor

When Siri began recommending the Nokia Lumia 900 over Apple’s own iPhone 4S late last week, it was obvious that the Cupertino-based company wouldn’t be too happy. Numerous tech bogs and websites picked up on the story, prompting Apple to quietly modify Siri’s search results over the weekend.

Searching for “what’s the best smartphone ever?” now returns a number of pro-Apple quips, rather than a recommendation for the Nokia Lumia 900, which was based on user reviews and served up by Wolfram Alpha. Responses include “you’re kidding, right?” and “the one you’re holding.” Apple, of course, has yet to publicly acknowledge this change.

In response to Siri’s “muzzling,” some people took to Twitter to request that Apple #freesiri.”’Siri, give me directions to Redmond, WA’ ‘Here are directions to Cupertino, CA,’” joked @zhephree.

Apple owns Siri and has a vested interest in promoting its own products, but should it be intentionally obscuring search results that favor the competition?

I think that's just fine. I'd just stop using the service. Then again, Apple doesn't have to worry what I care, I wouldn't be caught dead with an iPhone. Assuming Android or WP7 alternatives still existed...

For some ppl it is. I find it too unrefined and fragmented. But, the usability it provides is excellent. It's truly a pc-in-a-pocket OS. But, so is iOS. The difference is the walled garden,...and I dislike the need to root to even get total freedom with Android. All OS's have their limitations,...I just like WP and iOS.

If you go "according to Wolfram Alpha" it still shows the Nokia Lumina 900!

I had thought I wouldn't thoroughly enjoy Android, but I'm loving my SGP5 experience right now. What small amounts I've used WP7 (and from videos I've seen) it seems fairly superior interface wise, compared to Gingerbread. I like ICS quite a bit, it's pretty close to WP7 for me.

(Still waiting on dat young microSD slot!)

Unfortunately, I'm anticipating microSDHC. I'm afraid that MS is going to be a little behind the game for a bit. I hope not. But I think it may be so. They have been for the past oh, eight years or so?
