Exclamation BayerDynamic DT770 80ohm or 250ohm???

Ok, this is more of a question about usability than anything else. I ordered the DT770's, and they accidentally shipped me the 250ohm model instead of the 80ohm. I want to use these mostly WITHOUT an amp. Should I exchange them for the 80ohm, or just keep what I have coming?

Guitar Center will allow me to just walk in and swap them, so there's no issues there. I just need a little help on this one,...

Knowledgeable info would be appreciated. Thanks,...

Any one of your players should be able to power the 80ohm model just fine without an amp....but some of them (like your new A-series) could potentially have trouble with the 250.

I wonder if you do use an amp if the 250's would be noticeably better than the 80's or not?

See, that's my issue. I don't want to be forced to use an amp, and the 80ohm are said to be the perfect model to use either with or without an amp. The 250ohm might be too power hungry for my usage. I'm not taking them for a ride on the train, mind you. But, it's a plus to have the flexibility to do so if I go on a trip.

Sensitivity of the 250ohm is 96db

Sensitivity of he 80ohm is 105db

It's looking like the 80ohm is the better for general usage,...

Actually, the Guitar Center site lists the 80ohm they have as being 96db spl as well. I guess it all comes down to which is the easier model to drive from a portable player.

I believe he had the 80ohm model. I hope he can give me a little more insight into this.

I also see they have a drummer's model, and it's better at blocking out external noise. The reason I passed on it is the inline control is something extra to break. I don't need/want it. Plus the higher cost isn't justified IMO.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. There's a 32ohm model as well. But, they're said to be the bass-light version. I also won't pay more for 'em, even if the "bass-light" moniker is BS. They DO have a shorter, more travel friendly cord though. But, I could always (eventually, knowing my lazy azz) shorten the cord on the 80ohm as well.

UPDATE: the 32ohm is the cheaper model. I guess they're not that popular.

Found this on NwAvGuy's site (he's only heard the 80s personally, these are just his guesses on the differences):

80 Ohm – The apparent favorite among people who like more bass in their headphones. They’re only available in the pro versions.

250 Ohm – In the pro version, these have a coiled cord and Beyer says they’re intended for mixing music. Reviews and published measurements indicate they have less bass than the 80 ohm and 32 ohm versions. They’re best used with a source intended to drive high impedance headphones.

He also did say the 80s were usable with portable gear.

Yeah, I have a few days before they arrive. I'll hit up the NwAvGuy review again as well. Thanks for the reminder.

The 250 Ohm DT990 I used to have was quite difficult to drive. My i9, which is a relatively powerful DAP, really struggled to give them a good amount of volume, and I also suspect that some clipping and dynamic range issues were present, compared to how they sounded out of an amp. With this said, it is possible and even likely that my impressions were affected by placebo effect.

Yeah, I had the 80 Ohm version, and I also tried the 250 version in a store (actually I tried all the DT770/880/990, except the custom 600 Ohm ones). As Jupitreas said, the 250 are rather hard to drive with a portable player - moreso than the 300 Ohm HD650, it seemed to me. If you want portability, I sure would prefer the 80 Ohm one.

Great, then I'll swap them for the 80ohm model instead. Thanks dfkt & jupetrius for the help.

Now, I gotta add, I ordered these from Guitar Center and missed out on applying a mothers day 12% off coupon (MOM12). I contacted them via email, and a few MINUTES later received a response. They applied the coupon code, and I got the refund!!! Damn!!!

Guitar Center is now my preferred choice for hp's!!! Plus, they have a good amount of B&M locations here in NYC for me to walk right in and try stuff out. I luv it!!!

I'm curious about how the construction of these differ. Do the higher impedance ones use thinner wire in the the driver coil?

Don't start derailing this thread with the ramifications of thinner vs thicker wire inside the headphone. Especially since I'm not even going to OPEN the 250ohm packaging. I can't believe you JK98,...

On second thought, yes, I CAN!!!

I received the 250ohm DT770 today, and I must say the SQ is damn fine!!! Amped AND even unamped they sounded fantastic, and the bass was actually quite good. They say the 250ohm are lighter in the bass dept BTW - I can't wait to swap 'em and hear how boomin' the 80ohm'ers are. They really sound comparable to my D2000's. They are slightly lower in the clarity dept, but no big loss. I luv 'em!!!

Rip them apart... see how thick the wires are.

Bwahaha, I wish... I been working. Just about hunted my Foreman today. It wouldn't have been much of a hunt though.. I think a common rock is smarter than he is.

True dat!!! Same with me, since the idiot is so close to getting himself in the shit, and I'm sitting pretty. I may be an azz, but I'm also the type that does what has to be done. And, tbh, I NEED a beer!!!
