What does Adobe Air does on Android anyway?

For the life of me I cannot figure this out. I've had a couple of games requiring Air but that's it. What does it do?

You've obviously never read articles aimed at programmers, that's relatively high level.

It's basically a stand-alone flash environment.

Adobe Air is similar to Java. It lets developers create programs which work on every operating system (usually, this is not the case) - the only requirement for the user is that Adobe Air / Java is installed.

Yes, I read it, and understood it. But, considering how good I am at EXPLAINING things, I was hoping someone who has a little more "hands on" time would translate.
