PenTile/AMOLED vs. any other screen technology?

There's this... this "debate" that's been going on between me and someone else, about the relative "superiority" of either technology (technologies).

Basically we are comparing the screens of an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S II. I personally favor the overall tones of the Samsung S-AMOLED+ but the other person does make some points regarding the Samsung:

S-AMOLED+ (and by extension, AMOLED as a whole) has overblown color tones that is too "rich" and artificial.
The PenTile technology displays obvious "jagged edges" and "grains" while displaying fine icons and text.

Basically what do you guys think?

I prefer the clarity of the iPhone's IPS screen, but the sizing of the S II or S III's screen. I dislike some amoled screen's lack of true color reproduction. The over saturation of red's,...

But, on my Lumia 900 The amoled screen looks fantastic to me,...but I'd have killed for an IPS panel instead,...

If the screen is calibrated correctly then isn't any saturation or poor looking pics a problem with the picture itself, photographer or editing of said picture

Not with most amoled screens it seems - red's seem to be a prob (I sure as hell don't want to explore the tech ATM to fully describe it). Or, is it just the company's not doing it right? I can't answer this one WG, I just know what the common complaint about the tech seems to be. I think amoled plus somewhat alleviates the problem,...but don't hold me to this comment.

Besides, wait till the REAL tech nerds get here,...it'll be quite an informative read I believe.

I believe with the HD pentile AMOLED screens (with high pixel densities) the "jagged edges" is no longer present. I haven't seen a review bringing up those issues with the galaxy nexus or galaxy note. However, you might some pixelation on some letters with the most smallest font if you look close enough.

I only seen the AMOLED plus screens as I only know people with GS2's. To me the GS2 even with a lower DPI than Iphones seem to reveal extra textures and depth in pictures (especially paintings) and videos. It might not be completely "accurate" but definitely more pleasing to the eye.

Nathan, get a chance to see a Nokia Lumia 900 screen. I think you may like what you see. I know the resolution is a bit lower than some, but it's quite a pleasurable viewing experience.

Well, since hes talking about Pentile being a problem for the S2, and the S2 doesn't have Pentile, he doesn't know what hes talking about.

That said, 800x480 on a 4.3" display is just too low, so I tend to agree with him that the 4S is better. 800x480 should never have been used on screens bigger then 3.7", and even that was pushing it.

That test is not doing what the author thinks it is. What hes really testing is how the image scaling code in the iOS, Gingerbread and ICS web browsers works, not the actual quality of the displays.

That banding and aliasing you see in the center of each screen is due to the ringing in the digital filter used to resize the image. For this test to have been fair, he should have resized each image in photoshop or similar program using a very high quality resizing filter (that is, one with minimum aliasing), and then displayed it at native resolution on the device so that you wouldn't have to use the built in filters.

Wth, I entirely disagree with the guy that made that video, and many replies to it. Imo HTC looks the most saturated and yellow-ish, hence crappiest. Nokia looks good, a bit more vivid than the iPhone but I would say the iPhone wins on that picture. I would still pick the Nokia over the iPhone, always.

I think I'll just grab the LT28i or the LT29i when it gets released here in Canada. Which should only take like, 20 years, really.
Or the RAZR MAXX. Damn that's a nice-looking phone with a huge batt.

^ Yeah the Lumia sure looks 『残念』 with the thick blue edges. That's a Japanese term BTW, I can't find a corresponding English term for it.

I don't think you can really compare how colors look on a youtube video of a screen. All you're seeing is how those colors looked to the video camera.
