Default Sprint announces the LG Viper for April 22, will we see Sprint LTE then as well?

The nation, well, the Sprint nation has been waiting with baited breath for word as to when Sprint with flip the switch on its LTE network, and when customers can get their hands on one of Sprint’s upcoming LTE devices. Sprint is still playing coy and sticking to its “mid-2012” statement, but we now know that the LG Viper will be available on April 22, April 20 if you preorder—which, as promised, you can do as of yesterday.

Priced at $99.99 with a two-year contract, the Viper 4G LTE is at the bottom-end of Sprint’s announced 4G LTE phones, with the Galaxy Nexus and HTC EVO 4G LTE both clearly out-dueling it in pretty much every way—except price, of course. But the LG Viper is no slacker with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM, a 4GB microSD card—expandable to 32GB, as per usual—and a 4-inch touchscreen covered in Corning Gorilla Glass. A respectable 5MP rear camera and a VGA front camera handle shooting activities.

Having now covered the phone, my real question and curiosity is thus: will Sprint launch its 4G LTE network this month? Certainly there is a precedent for launching mobile hotspots and other low-profile devices before a network is ready, but a smartphone? This, however, begs a second question. If the network will be ready until April 22, why the heck would Sprint lead with the Viper? Why not lead with the ultra-popular Nexus with ICS? Better yet, why not lead with your own drool-worthy flagship? What on earth are you doing Sprint, and why aren’t you telling us!?
