Default The battle at $8

Don't laugh. I am looking for the best earbuds or IEMs for $8 or less. So far the contenders are the Sony MDR-E828 earbuds and the Panasonic RP-HJE120 IEM. The Sony has more bass, however the Panasonic has better treble. The Sony is much more efficient, however the Panasonic isolates somewhat. Which others should I consider? How does the Sony E828 differ from the E818?

The Monoprice 8320 (MEP-933) have quite the following on head-fi. I do not own them so I am unsure how much of that is hype. The Philips SHE3580 have also created a lo of buzz. Again, I cannot comment.

I have seen the MEElectronics M9 under $8 on sale, but they might be hard to come by at that price again. The MEElectronics M2 regularly under $8 and decent. Better than the EP-630 IMO.

Sometimes people have special projects that they need very low priced earphones or headphones for.

The dollar store IEMs and earbuds are total junk. I used to buy their earbuds years ago when they came with the earpads. I would buy them for the earpads and throw away the earphones. They were Coby, Sentry, etc. Very horrible sound. The Sony E828 and Panasonic HJE120 are pleasant enough to listen to. The $1 earphones sound horrible!

Thanks, but for this application I really want a right angle plug. Pink would also not be satisfactory.

I've been using the RP-HJE120 quite a bit more, and now I think it sounds much better than the Sony E828 earbuds. I guess it needed burn in. Since it has oval noggles, twisting it while in the ear helps increase the bass and the seal. Why don't all IEMs have an oval nozzle? The oval nozzle IEMs fit the ear better, and can seal tighter with rotation. It is now my favorite IEM under $15.

Yeah, the Monoprice 8320 just received high praised from one of the supreme reviews on Head-Fi. It got a 7.5/10 in SQ compared to some 200+ earphones.

I took one for the team and ordered the $7 monoprice headphones. Hopefully they're half as good as their hype or else they'll be present material to a very non audiophile friend . I said this about these headphones in another thread but the build quality looks very good for its price. I'll give a quick impression when I get them.

JK98, if you don't mind me asking, why exactly under $8 and not under $10? Having a budget exactly under $8 seems a little odd.

I went over budget and got the MeElectronics M9 for $10, and the SQ is excellent. I bet you'll eventually see them on sale for $8 - or maybe I missed them when they popped for that price. Either way, the SQ is worth the extra $2!

I did see the M9P for $7.99 once at Newegg. Only once mind you.

curios to hear your impressions. I was thinking about getting a pair or two for my daughter. she destroys IEMs so I try to stay cheap but lately she has become a bit of a bass head.

I am actually looking at under $8, hoping to get them on sale for $6 or less.. The trouble with going over the budget a bit is that one can keep expanding the budget, first from $8 to $10 then from $10 to $12, etc. and before you know it, you are up to $25 or $30. In the $10-12 region, the Sennheiser MX270 earbuds looks interesting.

I still don't really understand the purpose of the $6-8 pricing, but to each their own.

BTW, the Panasonic RP-HJE120 are $10 MSRP in the USA and $20 MSRP in Canada.
