Hello Guys!
I'm quite new onto this Cowon stuff but I'm already fascinated! To my story: Owning the J3 at v2.25 I've read your article about h.264 files in avi containers. So far, so good... I've tried this stuff by myself, but I was not always really satisfied with the converted result, caused by artefacts in the stream by a too low leveled bitrate or a too big filesizes at a moderate bitrate. Also SUPER was messing up with my installed CCCP-Codecs, Haali wasn't working correctly after using SUPER, forcing a new settings setup of CCCP after avery use of SUPER. So I was looking for an other alternative for decoding. Luckyly I found this little guide on an asian website: http://378ps9500rpm.blog121.fc2.com/blog-entry-23.html Just put it in the Google-Translator an find out the secrets! Maybe someone has enough time to make a translated guide, but the website shows everything clearly. And once the output setup is done in Xvid4PSP, you will only have to adjust the output videoscale the next time, everything else will stay as it is. By the way: I used exactly the same version as in the guide. Tried with v6.0Beta before, but the menu was different and confusing as x.264 offers a lot of setup possibilities. But maybe someone will find some time for the newer versions... Last night it compressed a 5GB 1080p video (converted from a mkv to a m2ts file with mkv2vob) down to 400MB within 3,5-4 hours! The output was really impressiv, quality was awesome. No artefacts, no stuttering, nothing. And most of all: working in MP4/AVC. PS: If someone already discovered this option and I'm just repeating - sorry for that mistake! Cheers Xanthurum |

So you're saying with this frontend it's possible to create h264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container - that plays on the J3? That's excellent news if it works. I will certainly give it a try.
EDIT: that idiotic Winnydows website forces one to install Silverlight to access it. Good riddance, here's an alternative download: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/XviD4PSP

Amazing! It works perfectly well, and the quality is excellent. Thank you so much for linking that tutorial, Xanthurum.
Here's the settings I used with the current version of XVID4PSP, which differs quite a lot from the old version in the Japanese tutorial: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attached are the presets, just put them in your installed \XviD4PSP 5\presets\encoding\MP4\video and \audio folder, respectively.

Seems your computer is broken then. A fresh Windows install might fix that.

XVID4PSP is a better designed app that produces better files, and it is faster than SUPER.

it take like 2hours for an hour file video:0
so SUPER takes even longer than that imo

Hey Guys, checking back in!
Tried out the latest version. The result (the video content itself) seems to be identical to the result of the old version. OK, I mean, if you own a laboratory maybe you will find small differences ;-) The most interesting point is in my opinion the compression rate: I encoded exactly the same video with both versions, the settings from the japanese guide and dfkt's settings which seem not to be different. The output with the new version was at 840MB, the old version compressed the video to 609MB... Trying to attach a picture... So, OK... maybe or even for sure it will be some little option hiding in the x.264 settings, waiting to be discovered. I mean, I'm satisfied with the result if it is at least working and saving storage. There is an old saying: the newest is not automatically the best. Well... As long the conversion is still working I will stick with the old one. I'm sure for you cracks it will be a challenge to find out the secret key :-) Cheers Xanthurum PS.: If you trying different versions, it is possible you must reinstall AviSynth after moving back to the lower version. |

(Well, the 'secret key' to best quality rips would be enabling CABAC, which won't work on the J3 or in standard baseline profiles). Just use a lower CRF quality factor and/or set the codec preset from slower to slowest, to get even smaller files. Q21 might be overkill for 480x272 anyways, a lower quality factor would most likely work equally well, without visible artifacts. You could try CRF Q25 instead of Q21 (higher number means lower bitrate) and see if it's still good enough quality on the J3 screen.

One more important thing to keep in mind - XVID4PSP doesn't automatically change the audio channel settings to stereo. When you encode a video with 5.1 (6-channel) audio or similar, you have to go to "Audio > Processing Options" and force it to stereo sound, otherwise the video won't play on the J3. You can press the convenient "S" button next to the stereo setting, so the app remembers it for the next time.
