Generalized statements tend to stir more controversy than they clear up keyb_gr. Would it be possible for you to be more specific in what way the built in amp struggles and which distortion spectra would benefit from adding an amp? It would also be helpful if you could add your opinion on the chance of the improvements in the distortion spectra being audible.

I have Sennheiser PX-100 (not the II). Works fine. The Euro volume cap is turned off, correct? Is the ambient noise such that the PX-100II are being drowned out? If so, more isolation, rather than amplification, may be needed.
