Angry Zen Vision W predicament

Hey there ladies & gentlepeoples! I guess I'm the new kid in town and I'm in a bit of a sticky wickett. My Zen vision W, which creative_mp3_tech so graciously helped me with some missing parts a year ago, will not get any further than the recovery menu. When I power it on, I get the "Firmware Problem" popup.

Long story short, I think messed up the firmware. I tried reformatting and disk cleanup, but no dice.

My computer won't even recognize it & I tried on windows xp, windows 7, even linux, but to no avail. I'm beginning to think that the hard drive failed (which I certainly hope is not the case).

I finally found a battery for it and now I think I might need a new HDD, which is something I really can't afford at the moment.

ANY help on how to get this beauty of an mp3 player up and running would be very much appreciated. Thank you for reading!

I accidentally pressed "reload firmware" in the recovery mode about a year ago and it hasn't worked since. I'm currently on v1.01.02_0.0.24. Nothing I do is working. I want to reinstall the firmware, but my computer refuses to recognize the hard drive. I looked in almost every web site & forum imaginable & I hit a dead end every time.

you need to use WinXP/WMP10 not WMP11 installed to reload the firmwear.

yes really. The computer needs to "see" the player when you connect it. You must have that connection to reload the firmwear

Hmmm...I'll give it a shot. Does it matter that the XP machine already has Zen software installed, or do I need wmp regardless?

Well, I tried connecting it to Windows XP with Windows Media Player 10 & still nothing. This is the error message balloon I get: "USB device not recognized. One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"

I'm screwed aren't I?

:UPDATE:
I installed the Zen vision w software, and still nothing. The program says "Your player is not connected. Please connect your ZEN Vision W to the computer."

The computer simply refuses to read the device...I'm extremely aggravated this point. I have tried EVERYTHING and absolutely NOTHING worked. I've had this player for over 3 years with no battery, I spent $45 on a battery that took me years to find and now I can't even get the device to get passed the recovery menu. I guess it's safe to say that I am sorely discouraged.

Once again, ANY help is mucho appreciado. Thank you coachop94 for all your help by the way!

ok ,the player boots to recovery mode. Have you done a Cleanup/Reboot on the player?? If not do so. Before you connect the player restart the computer then AFTER you do the Cleanup on the player open the firmware file, then connect the player. If you are doing this on a desktop use the rear USB port if a laptop do not use s hub to connect just a USB port.

Ok, I followed your instructions to the letter and I still get "USB device not recognized. One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"

I have tried Cleanup/Reboot several times, with several cables, I've installed and re-installed the drivers, which the computer says there are none. I think I'm at the end of my rope and ready to pull my hair out...

This thing used to work just fine until I accidentally erased the firmware. Even the firmware file says "Your player is not connected, please connect your player". The Device Manager shows the player as "unknown device" with no yellow exclamation point thing.

What could I be doing wrong? I follow all the instructions down to every detail and get no results.

Just for reference, the computer I'm trying to do this on is an old Dell Inspiron 8200 loaded with Windows XP, Service Pack 3, Windows Media Player 10 and the Creative Zen Vision W Software installed. The USB ports however are USB 1.0. Could that be what's giving me this problem?

Is the player recognized on your computer that has the Win7 OS?

Yes. Win7 gives me the same "USB device not recognized" message. When I click on the balloon, it says "Windows has stopped this device because has reported problems. (Code 43)"

When I try to update the drivers, it says "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date" This is driving me up the walls! There is no reason why this should not work! I have met all the criteria and still I get "Firmware Problem" and "USB device not recognized"

:UPDATE:
I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers in win7 and now it says the device is working properly, but I'm still getting that acursed "USB device not recognized" balloon.

I even took it to the geek squad at my local Best Buy & they couldn't tell me what the problem was. Apparently, no one knows what this problem is. All the forums I go to are either ignored, or completely off the subject. I just want this thing to work.

Should I just give up & replace the drive?

I got the battery off of ebay, not from one of the people here. Unless he is, which would be a very convenient coincidence!

:UPDATE:
Holy crap, he is a member here! Just out of curiosity, how did you know I got the battery from nekazoo? I did not even know he was a member!
