Building the O2 will be my first DIY experience, but I'm affraid it will be unnecessary to build one in the first place because of the haedphone I use.
I use Grado headphones and notice others to use a headamp for them. But the way I see it, I wouldn't have to use one for the lack of gain of for instance my Ipod (or anything else but an Ipod). Are there other diffirences then just the low output impedance of the O2 that will affect the sound?
The low power gain stage op amp is similar to the JRC NJM2068 in terms of overload so there's nothing to worry about there.

As for your Grado headphones, it really depends on your source. If the output impedance is much over 32/8 or 4 ohms, or your source doesn't have enough output, then the O2 should provide some audible benefit. Otherwise, the O2 is probably a waste of money.

As for the desktop amp, I'm still hoping to have something published before the first day of winter. Right now I'm waiting on information regarding a possible DAC board to pair with it as an option for those wanting an integrated DAC and headphone amp.

Default waste of money

It won't be totally usefull building one, 'cause i'll learn a lot from it (and hopefully end up with a operational version of the O2).
Output impedance is presumably the double of 4 ohms, so for bass response the O2 could have an audible effect.
It could also be used as a preamp for portable sources and if i buy other headphones in the future, the use of the O2 could become mandatory in order to obtain good sound.

So i don't think building the O2 will be a complete waste of money.

For the DIY'ers in the crowd, I've just posted an "official" O2 Front Panel Group Buy thread here : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/group-buys/197975-official-o2-headphone-amp-front-panel-group-buy.html#post2736247
The original one was for interest, and completion of the design.

Curious to find out if the O2 will replace AMB M^3 with 3xOPA1641 and 30V linear PSU as my favorite amplification. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is... but ordered a PCB through Olli and can't wait to hear for myself whether the hype is justified!

I'm interested .. just curious how a $30 amp in parts goes to $150+ built.

Does it really take that long to assemble it ?

Pretty much everything else you buy is like that too. Its just not as easy to get parts costs on most consumer electronics.

The $30 figure does not include the enclosure, AC adapter and batteries.

How is that one put together? Hollowed out from the back or bottom (or top, since your's laying upside down)?
