I couldn't tell you.....I haven't used either one.
I only turned on the wifi for the initial setup phase, and it's been off ever since...lol.

Not silly at all. I have a Touch and a netbook if i want to wander around surfing with wifi.....I bought this reader to, um, read.

If I'd wanted to do all that other stuff, I woulda spent an extra $100 and bought a Nook Color.

btw, you gonna get some kind of portable light for night/dark reading?

How are the controls? Responsive? Slow? Page turns? eink Pearl screen flashing?

I don't have one of these, and probably won't. Reason, simply because I don't read enough for it to be a good purchase.

Wait - it just occurred to me. I can rent Kindles from my school's library. Maybe I'll try one out next year !

As to a light, I haven't yet, but I haven't gotten a case yet either. There are many options available on Amazon, some of which include lights, but I'm not worried about the light, really. If the power was to go out, I have a crank flashlight that I'm sure would work just fine. Thus far, I'm just keeping it in its original box when I am not using it.

Controls......screen is very responsive to touch. Just barely touch the screen on the side and the page turns(quickly), and the e-ink pearl flash only occurs every fifth page or so, not with every page turn. When the screen goes to sleep, and the famous author image appears, a swipe across the bottom wakes up the screen after you press the "n" button at the bottom.

@Marvin, that Nook actually looks pretty nice. Nicer than a friend's Kindle I got to briefly look at.

I've also heard that it's possible to download books free in PDF for the Nook instead of having to buy them. Is this true? That was one thing that stopped me from the Kindle, having to buy all the books....

It's not an ebook reader per se but a PDA, but this is what I've been using since 2004.

My HP iPaq HX4700 (flashed to WinMobile 6 with added support for Japanese handwriting recognition). The case is made out of magnesium allow, so I survived many hardships over the years - I also use an alluminium case. It only needs a new battery.

I also used it as an mp3-Player, as a portable movie player (4" screen @640x480), as a Japanese dictionary and for skype via WiFi.

Never had one, I was a Palm OS guy, but messed around with those a lot - friends had 'em. That looks like a very readable screen size. MUch better than Mobipocket on Blackberry's, which I have actually enjoyed reading on for years.

Till now, now that I have dedicated readers.

@McDougal, indeed, give it a whirl from ur school. Very cool they have those to rent! Your folks must pay high property taxes for schools to offer that sort of thing

Marv's new Nook is indeed slicker looking than my K3. Not sure I would have chosen it over the K3 though - believe the K3 supports a few more formats over Nooks, but that kinda thing, like choice of lossy encoders or headphones is purely personal preference [see what I did there? lol ]

@Marv, very nice indeed man. Do think about the case and a light though. Unless the Nook feels very sturdy with good, stiff, durable screen, don't take a chance on an accidental whoopsie, unless you only plan to read at home.

The light for eink is indispensible IMO. I like to read in darker ambient lighting - helps me get in the mood for the books. The bezel seems quite thin but wide on that Nook so pretty much any clip-on light will fit I am guessing. The one in my pics takes a single AAA and can last over 24 hours continuously. Nicely made, cheap and the lens has a diffuser to there are no hot spots of light on the screen - the light spreads and covers my whole K3 screen pretty well.

The screen size is good (8,2cm x 6,2 cm) but unfortunately you can't read bigger pdfs, since the flash memory is not fast enough. And the screen quality is great, but that's the least you can expect for 600€ (in 2004)...

The couple of times I've dropped my S639 confirmed all of my fears about those silly hard clear plastic cases on DAPs....each half goes flying and the now-naked player bounces on the ground. So I'll stick to my soft-ish cases that provide a little cushion on impact.

This one for the Nook will serve the same purpose....I won't take it out and read unless I am stationary, and if I go somewhere it will be safely ensconced in the case.

And my USB cable for the Touch shipped too....which will be nice when I am sucked into playing a game, I'll use this secondary cable with my USB wall charger. It sucks when you're making progress and all of a sudden you get the low battery warning....lol.
