Dude, Z:HD's just keep popping up all over the place,...I can't give you a reason since I'm mind-boggled myself. It just goes to show that they sold better than most people really know (at least here in NYC I guess,...).

I know all of you with your Zune problems (DS)

Thing is its a really nice device I can understand why to those who dont go play with one in the store.

That thing is smooth as a girls ***

It's fucked up they won't do more for it.

They also don't advertise a headphone jack. Some things you just assume are part of a music player.

The sound quality of the Z:HD is very good if you get good headphones. I am more disappointed in the MS explanation of why they omitted EQ than the omission itself.

I'm currently putting some tunes on my Z:HD as I type, and I set it to down-convert the higher bitrate songs to 192kbps for the device. The sq difference will be negligible - especially when the Digiziod ZO gets hooked up to it. I'm quite gonna enjoy it - but I still want a custom EQ, but it ain't never gonna happen.

Just chiming in here, since I was quoted from a post a loooooong time ago, and I posted more recently on this topic (but I'm not going to go dig it up - by all means search and post a link here).

We never proceeded with EQ in firmware because we found in testing that with the hardware platform we had, implementing EQ had a really negative impact on battery life. Now, you might have said - we're a software company, can't we solve that problem? Yes and no - we can't retro-actively change the hardware - and there's only so much we can do in software.

Given the choice between putting an unreasonable number of resources on this for quite possibly an unsatisfactory solution, it was decided to focus on other areas instead. That's about as much detail as I have guys - I'm not a developer, I wasn't on the dev team when this was looked at, etc...

You might argue with that decision - by all means flame the hell outta me - but that's the background to the call we made there.

Cheers, Dave.

I could care less about a EQ. With good headphones the zhd sounds great. But a search tab is what I need. With so much music its a pain to have to pick a letter than scroll thru a hundred songs in on letter to get my song. Also with ever increasing number of apps would it be possible to make the app view more like the albums view? Like 4 apps across and when you tap the app you want it goes to the view it has now like albums. Also be able separate the apps be catagory (social networking, sports, ect.) like in the software.

Thanks for that hindsight view, Dave. Doesn't raise my opinion of the ZuneHD though. Had high hopes for its potential based on published specs when it came out. Turns out a whole slew of decisions were made that prevented it from ever being anything more than it started out being. Then MS promises apps, and fooled us all into believing the apps would make it a competitor to the other WiFi enabled device coming out at the same time and since. The least you could have done was come out with a ZuneHD-2 a year later to correct all those mistakes. Then I remembered it was MS I was dealing with. A slow boat that takes 3 years to make a turn. Can't get excited about the Windows Phone 7s for the same reasons. Looks like bad hardware decisions early in the game are already crippling software potential down the road. Had a Sprint employee urge me to try out one of the new Phone 7 devices. When pushed, he confessed they hadn't been selling and he was getting aggravated at what his own couldn't yet do. Apparently no multi-calendar support for Google calendars bugs him royally. No thanks. Please tell the Phone7 boys and girls.

...and same.

Would have been great if Microsoft had adequately investigated the capabilities of the hardware before they committed to it, but alas...

Seems like some engineer was like "look at this amazingly powerful device!" And microsoft was just like cool now let's see what we can do with it.

And then they were like, "Oops, not much! Marketing people, what's our solution?
Marketing people: "We insist the device is 'premium' and 'music centric!'"
Microsoft bigwigs: "Excellent! Now get it on the shelves so we can focus on Kin!"

Thanks Dave. That makes more sense than the original explanation.
I didn't see this explanation when searching.

One of the things I like best about the Zune HD is the long battery life.
