Default Wii u

Yeah the wii u will be the name of nintendos new console. Well the graphics from gameplay sure put it above the 360 or ps3 so far but the controller cost looks like it could be very high.

That is the controller , i am sure all it houses are the lcd , motion micro machines , a battery and some sort of hdmi wireless receiver or maybe a custom soc.

Definitely looking forward to playing with one of these, I think Nintendo made a mistake however by not improving their graphics further. this is a next gen console,I dont expect them to beat the same gen offerings from sony and MS, but come on, being equivalent with the last gen graphics? That's just sad.

Meh. The other consoles' graphics suck too. Old PC games look better.

Honestly though, wtf is that thing lol. . . enough with the retarded controllers. :-/

This new controller seems like it is has a ton of potential. The stuff that the controller did in the presentation was really cool already. It will be interesting to see what else they do with it.

Is it just me or is that gonna be the bottom screen for a huge DS, with the Tv as a top screen?

nah, i don't think its gonna work like that, i think the touch wont be utilized to the same degree that it was on the DS

Looks cool, but that gun attachment looked ridiculous. Also the golf ball? Well unless the wiimote actually notices the ball on the ground (And then counts the hit angle and velocity) I dont think its very practical or necessary.

As for the touch screen, I think its exactly what the DS bottom screen is, except it has the potential to be a multi player experience. A metroid hunters game on that thing could be cool, but I'm just wondering how easy it would be to hold that slab with one hand?

Nintendo has a thing for making controllers for aliens.

I personally think that the N64 controller is the only really odd controller they have made. The Gamecube controller is my favorite and the Classic Controller Pro for Wii is very nice too.

Looking at the controller, I wish the analog sticks were below the D-pad and buttons...
Oh, well. Minor complaint.

On the other hand, I'm totally looking forward to the Kirby game.

I think for some games it will be, for some games it won't.

For graphical show cases the bottom screen isn't going to be able to do much and sure enough on the Zelda tech demo the bottom screen is just an easily accessible start menu.

The demos that used the controller in super innovative ways with full graphics on both screens essentially had Wii level graphics (probably hi rez but hard to tell in a low rez internet video).

It makes sense - the processing power has to be shared out between what's going on on the TV screen and the pad screen.

It does answer Nintendo's brief well though - they want to keep the fun, gimmicky gaming stuff to try and keep the casuals gaming, but they want to enable proper "gamer" gaming. This covers both bases.

Playing a fully graphic'ed up game, you've got dual analogue sticks, you've got triggers, bumpers, buttons and the screen is a nice bonus - a quick access start screen with touch input, HUD stuff you don't need litttering the screen, mission details, a map - but essentially the game is on screen as is tradition.

But the potential for crazy innovative control methods is there with the screen - some of the ideas in their tech demos showed some amazing possibilities.

They've set out some good potential, and you can be sure their games will be great fun as usual, its all down to the third parites as to whether it'll really succeed in bringing gamers back though.

I'm being more optimistic this time around about third party-support, as these games have been announced for it already:
  • Ninja Gaiden 3
  • Darksiders II
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online
  • Tekken
  • Metro Last Light
  • Aliens Colonial Marines
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Dirt

I think a lot of developers would actually like to use some of the features of the U (as I’m sure they’d have liked the Wii’s potential if it wasn’t so limited) as long as they are sure their customers will be on the platform. The Wii having a largely casual user-base without a lot of genuine gamers was pretty off-putting. The main issue was the reduced power of the Wii compared to 360 and PS3 making cross platform games seem like a waste of time.

This time around though, I think it’s realistic to be optimistic. With Microsoft and Sony probably having another two years on their consoles before next generation, and the U being more than capable of matching them punch for punch spec wise, I expect most cross platform games will make it to the U. When the real next generation comes out, if all goes to plan, the U will be pretty established with third parties. Maybe we’ll see a drop-off in support then but not a complete and total one because it’ll still be financial viable to make real games for it.

yea, i was kind of thinking that this was really part of the same gen as the 360 and ps3, since those are really still selling well, we are still on that generation, and this is just another addition to it.

Well if what was leaked about the innards is true, it's perhaps "generation and a half" rather than next generation. It'll certainly be bested by Sony and Microsoft's consoles so there is a race for the U to establish itself solidly before then.

IGN did an interesting piece where they built a PC with the specs of what the U has leaked to be and compared games on 360/PS that are also on PC on their creation. They found the U could not get the absolute top end of graphics for the PC versions, but produced visibly better versions than the 360/PS3.

The issue is whether it will really show. Nintendo have no experience of working in HD and their demo of what the U could do (the bird thing) was like "yeah, so what?" it would hardly be considered incredible if seen on the 360 or PS3.

I personally doubt U will be anything but the equal to 360 and PS3 in practice, but obviously has a lot of tricks up its sleeve when it comes to control methods.

Those Legend of Zelda shots looked amazing and I can't wait to see some Nintendo games in HD.

well the thing with that is their computer was also running an OS, which will suck some of the processing power, it wont make a huge difference, but still...

the things that really turning me off is the possibility of the controller cost D:. just a ps3 controller now is already $55, and look at this new controller with all its features...

I could see that controller alone costing $100+ lol. . .

I love Nintendo! I really do, but I wish they would innovate more with their games rather than their weird controllers. They just keep making similar Mario and Zelda games over and over again so I got bored of the Wii pretty fast and gave up on it for a PS3. Not that the other consoles don't have this problem, games with huge numbers on them are never that different from their prequals, but Nintendo seems particularly bad in this respect.

Might as well call this thread the Wii U controller thread really, I wonder how long the thing lasts on battery then?

I guess how it performs will depend on how well the game code is made, probably badly like the PC's console ports, heh.
