hey I am thinking of grabbing the 32gb model but I was wondering if Cowon will release a successor soon or should I just go ahead and grab this?
EDIT: will do! (descriptive title) Last edited by samurai7; 04-11-2011 at 09:01 PM. |

Hard to know. The D3 effectively replaces the J3 by duplicating all its capabilities, but it may be targeted at more video-oriented users. The D3 runs a flavour of Android, so I'm betting that's where Cowon will put its development efforts, rather than Flash.
My money would be on saying the J3 is now superseded, but I've already bought my J3 (only a couple of months ago!) and have no need for the extra video capabilities of the D3. But if I were buying a Cowon unit now as my first PMP, I'd probably lean towards the D3, as a device that will at least (for a time, anyway) see ongoing development - something I doubt we'll see with the J3. |

I'd get a J3 now if the price is low enough. A new model will cost more. What happened to a J1 and J2? Their first model should have been J not J3.

I have no idea how Cowon decides on their model names. It may be D(1, 2. 2+) for a design named d-something, and J for designer J, and so on. When they choose a new model letter it may be because they've hired a new designer.
In any case functionally the J3 improved on the S9, and the D3 improves on the J3 in size, functions, and is catching up on gapless playback (hopefully). |

AFAIK, nothing in the wind on a successor to the J3 so why wait if you are in the market for one?
Edit: Totally OT, but congratulations skip252!

This is a tough decision that only a potential purchaser can decide. The J3 is a great player, but there can be one that supercedes in in the future. My advice is if you really want the J3, buy it now. You simply can't go wrong with it, unless if you need WiFi and flexable OTF playlists.

^ Agreed. Or save some and get the S9. Just as good.

True, the S9 is the same good quality but it is limited to 32GB. The J3 allows a microSD up to 32GB, so that makes it a pretty decent sized player and the SD card works really well.
I know it is subjective but after a while, I wasn't too keen on the curved shape of the S9, although initially I loved it. I had the 32GB S9 but sold it and got the J3. I haven't regretted it. |

No, even better. The J3s battery life is rated about 63 hours

It actually lasts in real life situation as well a bit longer then the S9/Sony camp which is nothing to shy at in the first place.

I don't think anyone believes that real-world use matches a manufacturer's claimed battery life, on Cowon or any other brand. My J3 (only about two months old) certainly doesn't play for 63 hours on a full charge. Still, it does a heckuvalot better than the D3's sad little 12-hour life.

Battery life never matches actual performance. The quoted playing hours are usually calculated with MP3 at 128mpbs, no bluetooth and low volume. Every manufacturer does this, so really it is comparisons that matter. I doubt if anyone encodes at 128 mpbs anymore but still the J3 battery is better than others. The X7 claims over a 100 hours but I have never tested this out as my music is at 320 and I use bluetooth which brings it down to around 10 hours...if that!!

The D3 is rated for 21 hours music. Still not as good as the J3, but as good as most other OLED/WiFi/Android devices.

Is that 21 hours with WiFi enabled, or disabled? I mean, the Touch 4G is rated 40 hours for music with WiFi disabled, but it is certainly lower than that with Wifi enabled.
