That reminds me a bit of the PDA type thing robert downey pulled out in the court room in iron man 2. With transparent OLED screen of course.

Ah yes, here's a video:

Acutally it does have a black (probably metal) trim. That though looks pretty cool.

^That's exactlly what I thought of when I saw the pics. Although Tony Stark's was much cooler looking in my opinion.

I think an iPod-touch-like product with full transparent thin glass body and all the guts stuffed into the top and bottom would be a decent product, really. I wouldn't put that past Apple, nor would I necessarily decry it (unless they sacrificed significant performance just for the glass).

But the OP concept was just fugly.

Except that it wouldn't be very sturdy, so it wouldn't be great for a portable device. And I don't know how they could fit all that stuff in a border and keep it sleek...

Samsung has created concept devices that were quite similar,...

That doesn't look like a comfortable user interface... and it doesn't look like it'll feel comfortable to hold.

I like it just needs some finishing touches like rounded edges and a border instead of one big bar at the bottom. Also the tactile buttons are a little to big for my taste. Hey maybe a new Zune? :P

What they creatively failed to show in the Iron Man clip was the fingerprints that would have fouled the screen and been visible from both sides. Twice as fugly as any ordinary touchscreen gets.

Wow, missed this thread...I am gonna be a heretic and say that I kinda like the looks of this thing At least I don't immediately hate it.

It does have a radical cool factor. I mean, we have all seen butt-ugly concept cars with some that eventually make it to production after smoothing things out a bit. Same with haute couture fashion.

Still, its kinda nice to see a bit of out-of-the-box thinking on the part of designers for DAPs/PMPs, no?

Notice I didn't say anything about function though. And yeah Olley, the fingerprints would drive me batty!

I just remembered seeing this: http://anythingbutipod.com/2010/01/s...ed-video-demo/ a while back. Similar, not nearly as sleek, but same idea.

The Samsung IceTouch is the first thing I thought of when I saw this concept.

And yet, I still don't necessarily like either.

No, I don't like it either. Not at all.

Thanks guys, I had forgotten all about that Samsung IceTouch. The IceTouch is an example I think of what I was talking about in terms of possible final production versions being toned down from original concepts, which IMO in this case, is not so great. The combination of clear and opaque materials for the IceTouch looks cheap, unfinished and incongruous together, at least from the video. Wonder what the IceTouch original prototypes looked like.

lol..seems I am alone on this latest see-thru thingy. Still think its an interesting concept but I am sure would be a day-to-day PITA, especially after the novelty wore off.

Well, maybe it will catch on. After all, clear screens have the ability to look pretty neat.

The problem is, this prototype is a terribly thought out device and the Samsung looks unattractive (to me, at least).

This is probably bad because with a clear screen, you have to have a background that does not block the words or make it hard for it to see. Or the screen would have to really be good.

Rather than clear glass I'd like to see what looks like a powder coated matte black plate about 1/8 thick with bull-nosed edges comfortable to hold. The UI/Images would appear in the coating, and both sides would work. Whichever side is "up" is the visual output, and whichever side is down is the touch surface.
