Just tried it with the SM3. I always use the SM3 flat, just the Rockbox Meier crossfeed added, since I just love their sound signature as it is, and I couldn't find an EQ setting or BBE tweaks that actually make them sound better to my ears... but I have to say a slight bit of ZO processing is pretty awesome with them too - only up to level 8 or so, beyond that it's too much for me.

OMG!!! I gotta get this!!!
EDIT: Quick question: between this and the FiiO E7 - which do you recommend (dfkt)? And my main priority is clean bass BTW. I also just found out (via the infamous "Facebook") that a ver.2 is in the works,...

For portable use the E7 is way too huge and heavy, in my opinion. It's more suited as a stationary DAC/AMP.
The ZO's bass boost is the best and cleanest I've heard in a portable device. The E7 has your usual regular bass frequency booster, and really can't be compared to what the ZO does to the sound. I've heard about the v2 ZO too... that one may be worth waiting for. There are some tiny flaws in the v1 they are going to iron out (clicks at turning on/off, shiny fingerprint magnet housing). Of course you can get the v1 ZO now for something like $50 when you look around, while the v2 sure is going to be a bit more expensive. Well, my full ZO review will be up soon.

Thanks for the quick comparison dfkt,...now I know I'll be getting the ZO,...and I'll jump when I find that $50 seller. And when the V2 hits it's mine - simple as that. WooT!!! Me HAPPY!!!
Oh, 1 more question: How's the battery life?

Another thing that's not so great, about 10 hours. Good enough for the Clip+, not so much of a match with the J3. Not sure if they give the v2 ZO an upgraded battery. On the positive side, the ZO has a bypass setting - even if it's turned off or the battery is dead, there's still the original sound coming through.
The ZO amps the signal itself, I'm sure you won't need a CMOY for driving the HD555 when you have the ZO.

10hrs? Still, it's enough to use w/my clip+, so it'd be good for now. I still can't locate it for $50 tho,...

dfkt, how does the bass boost on the ZO compare to the boost on the arrow? Clearly the ZO allows much more precise control, but how does the quality compare?
Edit: by the way, you said that the v1 ZO is available for $50 since it's soon to be phased out. Where did you find that price? The cheapest I've seen it sell for is $99.

The Arrow has a great regular bass boost, like a good quality EQ. This however can't be compared to the magicky thing going on in the ZO. With the Arrow you can't make the Phonak PFE or Koss KSC75 into really bass-heavy cans that are pounding and still dynamic, you can only raise the low frequency spectrum and pray that it doesn't distort, that it still matches a balanced sound. The ZO's shtick does more than that, just like BBE (as I mentioned above).
I read about those $50-60 prices over at Headfi, in the thread I linked in the first post. Seems it still can be found for something along these lines, judging by the latest posts, but I really don't know where.

Yes, it does hiss a slight bit with super-sensitive IEMs.
Sorry, I know as much as you. I guess they have no EU distributor as of now.
