Default The Sony PSP2, codenamed NGP

Link

Quote:

Betcha didn't think this day would come, but it finally has. Sony has just come clean with its next-generation PlayStation Portable. It's actually codenamed NGP and will revolve around five key concepts: Revolutionary User Interface, Social Connectivity, Location-based Entertainment, Converging Real and Virtual (augmented) Reality. It will be compatible with the PlayStation Suite.

Specs include a 5-inch touchscreen OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution, dual analog sticks (not nubs as on the current generation), 3G, WiFi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, the same accelerometer / gyroscope motion sensing as in the PlayStation Move, an electronic compass, and cameras on both the front and back. Oh, and the CPU is described as "the most advanced" in its class. Available this holiday season. Wait... what?!

Games will come on "new media," not UMD anymore, but we're unclear on what sort of flash memory is being used. Sony's rather proud of the fact it's offering the world's first dual analog stick combo on a portable device, though we're more geeked about the quadrupling of pixel count from the original PSP.

Sony's live event has been graced by demos of some pretty popular games, including Killzone, Resistance, Little Big Planet, and Uncharted -- with the latter serving as a demo platform to show off how the NGP's rear touchpad can be used to more intuitively climb up some vines. That touch panel on the back is the same size as the front OLED display and is "mapped" directly under it, which is allowing for some pretty sophisticated stuff when using the two simultaneously.

The new console's UI will be called LiveArea, which has a bunch of vertically navigable home screens and built-in social networking (presumably through PSN). You can jump between games and the LiveArea without losing your progress and comment on your buddies' great feats of mobile gaming.
omg dual analog sticks.

im selling my DS for this

I'm assuming that the battery life might be even worse than before though.

No check on engadget they wrote another article on the new PSP, i think the battery should be better than previous generations.

and omg. dual analog sticks. my life is complete.

PS.

really hope this doesnt turn out to be like the X10, if i remember correctly it was uber hyped when it got announced, but by the time it releases its already kinda out dated

We'll just have to see, but i doubt Nintendo is gonna release something better than the PSP2/NGP which isn't the 3DS. even when the PSP2/NGP comes out, its still better than the 3DS IMO.

Hardware rarely makes a system better, the wii has outsold the ps3 and 360 combined lol. The DS is also the best selling portable that has ever existed.

Money talks, bullshit walks when it comes to gaming.

The problem is that no one will buy a PSP2 because it'll cost a tonne of money, causing the devs to lose interest because no one will be able to buy their games, causing people to get even less interested in the PSP2 because there are no games for it (now where have I heard that before? ).

Vicious circles ftw.

The 3DS, on the other hand, will have loads of good games, and because it has a very decent price, people will buy it, devs will make more games, people will buy more games and more 3DS's, etc.

tl;dr: Nintendo always wins, that's just something even the most hardcore Sony fanboy cannot deny.

Well, maybe they can. But nobody else.

The Price of the device is what will decide its success, they could also have a slider that goes from most successful to least successful and the price slide would move right along with it.

With 3G connectivity, unless it is subsidized with a contract from a carrier, I'd bet it'll cost $400.

Too much for my tastes Marv,...screw that. But, they say a wifi only model will be available as well,...so maybe $350?!?!?! Still a no-go for me.

Yeah, but you need a really good idea or feature to make 'lesser' hardware sell. The Wii just happened to be the most innovative thing to hit gaming at the time. I am not so sure that the 3D feature of the 3DS is going to be that big, even though it is 'glasses free' it seems more like the bullshit in this case.

Either way, this launch lineup is looking pretty good compared to the 3DS launch lineup, makes you think if Nintendo is launching at this time just to be first?
