I seek a device with the following features:
* Digital Voice Recording * MP3 Player * Micro SDHC Support The sound quality must be high. Therefore, I am primarily interested in something labeled a "DVR" (with MP3 play support), rather than an "MP3 Player" (with DVR support), as I understand that the latter tend to have poor recording quality. I also want to be able to use 32GB (SDHC) memory modules. Anyone know of a device with those specs? Feedback appreciated. |

The Olympus WS700M is only around $70. It has a micro SDHC card slot, a mic jack, decent quality voice recording(and can even record decently in stereo), and runs 25 hours on AAA battery(it comes with an nimh battery, which the recorder can charge via usb). The downside? No tag browsing. No shuffle mode, unreliable or perhaps no support for vbr, and mp3 or wma only. The worst part is that there player doesn't seem to sort the files in order(it seems a number of recorders have this problem). I have been thinking about buying this for a while, but haven't bought this due to its limitations as a player. For voice recording this has received great reviews. If your main use is voice recording then get this. If you don't find it satisfactory as a player, then you could also get a Clip+ for under $50 and use that as a player.
The WS700m might take 32GB cards(even though the manual says cards 512 meg to 16 GB) , however it has a 300 folder limit so as a practical matter even if it could take a 32 GB card, you might not be able to make complete use of it. The Sony PCM-M10 is around triple the price and over triple the weight of the WS700m. It might be a better choice if you must use 32 GB cards. http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ghlight=ws700m |

JK98, thank you very much for the info. I shall investigate both recorders.

The Sony PX312, AX412, and UX512 recorders also have a micro SDHC card slot. The UX512 seems more interesting than the ws700m, even though the UX512 only goes up to 192 kbps. The Sony players support variable bitrate files. It also seems like the ws700m and ws710m only take up to 16GB cards, while the Sony recorders take up to 32GB cards.
