Cannot upgrade firmware on K3

I am currently running firmware version "3.09 WA JN". The K3 is running as an MTP device, and I am having trouble creating playlists. I believe that would be easier if it were running as UMS so I wanted to upgrade the firmware.

However, when trying to use this walkthrough http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=14516 I can't even format the K3 since it is not an option in Windows when I right click the device.

Can anybody help me upgrade the firmware and make the K3 run in UMS mode?
