Hi everyone,
First I have to admit that up to now I have been an avid supporter of the ipod. That was until recently when I ran out of storage space. I am looking for an mp3 that you can buy memory cards to add more storage if you need to. The catch is it must have a screen where you can view and scroll through songs/albums etc and it can't be too small, I would drop the sansa's within minutes. Please give me your suggestions, Thanks,

How much storage do you need? What is your budget? The Cowon J3 looks interesting, except that it is expensive. The Sandisk Clip+ is quite small, however the Sandisk Fuze is not that small.

Well I've dropped my Sansas a few times already, and they are still working great.

J3 is the one I have been looking at. Also the new archos "internet tablets" have slots.

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions so far. I don't really have a budget in mind because I don't really know what's available. As far as storage goes, a large as possible, think that's a 32gb card? I have an 8gb ipod at the moment but rarely get rid of music that I've brought so a 16gb player would not be worth the money to me.
In short, if it has the specs I want I don't mind spending a bit. Obviously though if I don't have to I don't want to

The largest storage possible using flash memory is now 64 GB(either a Cowon J3 32 GB and a 32 GB micro SDHC card, or a Zune 64 GB). A Cowon J3 32 GB plus a 32 GB micro SDHC card will cost you around $400 though! For only around $175 you could get a Sandisk Fuze 8 GB and a 32 GB micro SDHC card giving you 40 GB. Is it worth spending $225 more to have 24 GB of extra space(the J3 has more than double the battery life of the Fuze and much beter video though).

Cowon J3 16gb: $220 at amazon.
Archos 43 16gb: $249. With both you get great media apps and excellent media playback. Both have microSD slots. With the 43 you also get WiFi, email, browsing, and access to a few hundred thousand android apps. |

With the Cowon you get really good audio playback, including gapless support, BBE sound enhancements, and a well working semi-parametric EQ. Not to mention enough tactile buttons to be useful on the go. So if audio playback is your main requirement, consider that over the Archos.

The 43 also has gapless support. You also get left/right balance.

You're the first one to mention gapless on the Archos. Is that Archos-specific, or the default Android audio player?

It was mentioned on the archosfan forum, where someone left a link to a review. I believe his blog mentioned the music app was archos specific, and not the standard android app. Another thread also confirmed FLAC would play gapless too. I don't have a 43 yet, and have only been able to play with a friend's for a short while. I don't think the EQ presets were more than a few, although there was one custom option. I never saw how to create a custom EQ though.

Agree - if audio is your thing primarily, look at the Cowon J3 in this price range....
