Default HiFiMAN HM-602

It's now available for preorder:

http://www.head-direct.com/product_detail.php?p=90

and the price apparently (according to a post by the Head Direct proprietor on Head-Fi) includes a pair of RE-262.

Any thoughts about the specs on this one?

Anyone expecting to do a review?

The Head-Fi guys are drooling over this one. Just wondering what some of the objective opinions might be.

Methinks the chance it's not a waste of money like the HM-801 is slim.

dfkt will you be reviewing/testing?

Another Chinese made pos scam player , made for audiofools. It is sad people will actually fall for stuff like using an outdated dac and such because somehow it will sound better when even tested results prove other wise. Yet the supporters of such products will still say that testing will always fail to subjective listening tests :P.

I'm not sure how relevant/important this number actually is but isn't this extremely high?

Distortion: 0.09%

I think my creatives are like .01%. . .

I think that the sun would need to rise in the west before dfkt revisits any HyFYMan product DAP player.

Of course, perhaps for the benefit of all [not to mention in the interest of science and general audio tomfoolery-mythbusting], he might consider subjecting himself to the torture and nonsense he endured with the 801.

...but I wouldn't count on it :-)

EDIT: 16GB flash + 10hour runtime in a device larger than my old cassette Walkmans. And all for only 369USD 369USD pre-order discount price with a projected 450USD production price?

roflmao - I pass

Well HiFiMAN isn't all bad, I love my modest DAC/AMP.

Fair enough I should modify my post to specify HiFiMan DAPs then

Impressive 10 hour battery life on the brick II, isn’t that a rerun

Edit: I would imagine that you’d need to charge it before you can even go through all the tunes on the on 16gb internal flash memory, just think if you add a 32gb card, lol.

I've been thinking about the EF2 for office use.
I also like the RE0 and have received terrific customer service in the past.

What's weird about the preorder thread on that other site is that the Head Direct folks update information about the new DAP in response to specific questions, rather than just providing complete details/specifications (e.g., What comes in the box? Does it support gapless playback? etc.) in the first place. I guess it could be their marketing strategy.

Sorry man. Although responses here are more entertaining than reading the Head-Fiers creaming in their pants (can I type that?).

Don't take offense.....our issues are with the Hifiman DAP's, not you.

At least it looks less stupid now.

Quote:
It is well known that Non-oversampling dacs offer great sound for little money. HM-602 is the first portable player using non-oversampling DAC: Philips TDA-1543. As younger brother of HM-801, HM-602 shares HM-801's 'great' sound signature. To make it as 'portable' as possible, HM-602 do not have amplifier modular design. However, its headphone amp part is very similar to HM-801's standard module. To drive both high impedance and low impedance headphones, HM-602 with the high / low Gain switch can drive both high efficiency IEM and most full size headphones. In addition, HM-602 also can work as a USB DAC.
Fixed their blurb.

AND THE BEST THING IS?

Quote:
Note: TDA1543 DAC chips are tested used chips because TDA1543 was discountinued many years ago.
They're putting old, used items in your new DAP.

The TDA1543 is from 1991 - a twenty year old DA converter chip. Ah, the good old times, when digital audio was an adventure. Of course nobody made anything better in the meantime, 20 years of research in the now mature field of digital audio only made things worse for "audiophiles"... back then it was all much better, when most people still used vinyl and cassettes - and such obsolete first-ish-generation DACs.

That thing almost makes the outdated, severely rolled off PCM1704 in the Hifiman HM-801 look like bleeding edge technology. Well, some people sure believe such scrapyard stuff sounds "better" than a decent player.

EDIT: Found some RMAA tests with that TDA1543 in a circuit. Appears to be the same rolled of nonsense as the HM-801. Again, lack of treble is sold here as "hi-fi" - just cause that flavor of sound had to be used 20 years ago as a workaround, cause the shitty DACs sounded harsh back then. Nowadays there is absolutely no reason to use such rolled off, flawed stuff when linear DACs perform perfectly well. Nowadays, you can always use an EQ on a decent player to achieve the same "hi-fi" sound...

I'm guessing he (you know who) got a deal on discontinued DAC’s and is riding on the hype from yester year, hoodwinking the audiophiles and maximizing profits. Personally I'd rather have a 32GB J3

BTW, thanks for finding the RMAA tests.

Given that the blind headfi-ers will purchase it, it's not particularly hard to see why they keep pushing such crap.

@ dfkt's post, wow, that does seem really sad. . . a used 20 year old DAC in a DAP going for ~$400. . .
