Default eBook reader for the e200 (version 0.9.13 released August 9, 2008)

I suddenly got the urge to get eBooks onto my e260 last night. I did some quick searches couldn't find any way to do it, so I came up with a little app myself.

It basically reads in text files and converts them to images to be used in photo mode. You can inverse the colors, set it to landscape or portrait modes, and show page numbers.

Unfortunately the player only seems to support a specific bitmap format, so each file is 78K versus what could be done in a 6K PNG. I did "The Tale of Two Cities" and it came out at about 200 megs, and 3000 images.

The media converter isn't recommended, use USB mode and drag and drop to avoid resizing images.

Still very much a work in progress, but maybe someone else can find a use for it.

It requires .net 2.0, available from Windows update.

Great app, Jason!

I'm not sure if Rockbox supports text files as of yet, but if not, it might be interesting if someone created a plugin that reads standard .txt files. (Thought I mention that, since Rockbox development for the e200 is already pretty far...)

New version, some pretty important changes.

First, fixed a bug when using the widescreen/rotated modes not rotating all images.

Second, fixed the issue with images appearing mirrored on the PC but OK on the player. They do something weird with the image format, the media converter actually seems to make mirrored images just like I was, but they specified a negative height, ie -224 vs 224, so it would flip it. Not sure why ... The converter should work now, but is not recommended due to the point below:

Finally, I found the text quality was better by setting the resolution to 176x220 vs 176x224. It seems the player is altering the size on the fly and introducing defects like missing an entire row of pixels or distorting some characters. At the new resolution it seems to display perfectly.

Hi!

Fantastic! However, a PDF of 135 pages turn in 57 Mo instead of 360KB, do you think there is someting I can do?

Anyway, I would like to thank you for your job!

Unfortunately it only seems to support bitmaps in photo mode. I think it reads jpegs fine when showing album art, so this is just some kind of limitation they decided to impose. I tried coping over other types and they don't appear, renaming them to .bmp's cause an error when trying to view them. If it would read PNG's it about be down to about 7K per image with no image loss. A JPG is around 20K, though it will loose some quality. The bitmaps it has to use now are 78K.
