posted 3 months ago. i know very well that cowon is not a big deal, not even in south korea.

@usage over the last 5 years

i used this very h320 almost 6 out of 7 days a week the last 5 years, so i guess i know what i am talking about when i say a mp3 player can have a much much higher lifespan.

i used it the last two years in german high school and i had that thing with me, every single day i was at school. i listened to it while riding (bike) to school sometimes i would boot it up between the 10 minute breaks we had and then on my way back home i would listen to it as well. the last 3 years my usage decreased a little but only because of the battery disaster.
it dropped more then once while riding bike but the leather case miraculously absorbed most of the "kinetic energy" and this hdd player is still rolling to this very day.

the point i was trying to make about longevity is that (build) quality aside, you need to care for your stuff. i have many friends who carelessly threw their bikes in the next bush because they were drunk and couldn't drive anymore. the next day the bike was gone. some of those guys have had 4 bikes in the last 4 years while my bike is still rollin', 12 years now. it was a tough investment (mostly financed by my granny though) and it has amortized itself years and years ago while my friends buy themselves some mid price bikes in a years time and either lose them or wreck them, carelessly.

all i'm saying is that i like to be more efficient with resources.

edit: forgot about cowon...

as you already mentioned, cowon is a rather small company compared to most of its competition. afaik, they aren't even on display in big department stores or consumer electronics chains. BUT, you can buy cowon at german amazon, they have a german cowon site and many, many online retailers have them on sale. just not the J3. this is no coincidence.
for example: it took some time for the i9 to become available in germany, but eventually it did. and iirc it was under a month delay. the J3 is delayed for 3 months in germany already, while the J3 came to UK somewhere around end of april/beginning of may.

Sometimes some models can be delayed for several reasons. If the demand for the J3 is strong in the US and South Korea, and Cowon has very limited ability to make them, it might find it more profitable to sell them in the US or Korea than in Europe. It might be that German companies want to clear inventory of older Cowon models before stocking new models. Some resellers are also reluctant to stock new models as they fear the price might drop significantly enough in a short time. That is especially true for higher priced items than for budget items.

As for your mp3 player lasting 5 years, I don't doubt it. I was talking about an average lifespan of perhaps 18-24 months, which factors in all those careless people who excessively drop, abuse, wear out, put through the washing machine, lose(or have stolen), or otherwise just wear out a player. Some break a player within 3 or 6 months. Sometimes a player might still work after 2 years of heavy use,but perhaps the battery capacity might be quite low, and most people won't go through the bother or expense of replacing the battery. So far my Fuze is almost 2 years old and working fine, however I have not given it heavy use and only used it at home while sitting down(I use my Clip when walking around). I have an mp3 player that is 5 years old and works fine, but it uses a AAA battery, and I haven't used it much in the last two years so it isn't really relevant to discussions of longevity of player with a built in battery. I did break one mp3 player, and it was only after a very short usage time. I didn't use it for a long while after I bought it, and when it broke it was out of warranty.
